Glendale residents who rely on regional buses to get to work, medical appointments, or across the Valley will continue to have transit service under an agreement the City Council renewed on May 26.
The council authorized Amendment No. 14 to the intergovernmental agreement with the Regional Public Transportation Authority, which operates as Valley Metro. The amendment adjusts Glendale's financial contribution and extends the city's participation in regional transit for another year. It was approved as part of the consent agenda.
How Valley Metro serves Glendale
Valley Metro runs regional bus routes, paratransit services for people with disabilities, and coordinates transit planning across Maricopa County. For Glendale residents, the system provides connections to employment centers in downtown Phoenix, West Valley industrial and logistics hubs, Arrowhead Mall, and medical facilities including Banner Thunderbird Medical Center and Abrazo West Campus.
Glendale's transit needs differ from those of central Phoenix or the East Valley. The city is more car-dependent, with lower population density and employment spread across a larger area. Regional bus service is the primary transit option — light rail does not currently extend into Glendale. The RPTA agreement ensures that Glendale residents have access to the regional transit network even without rail service within the city limits.
The amendment was presented by Aliudeen Khan-Abrahim, the city's Deputy Director of Transportation. The specific financial terms — adjusted contributions based on changes in service levels and operating costs — were detailed in the agenda materials provided to the council.
A 14-year partnership
This is the 14th time Glendale has amended its transit agreement since the city became a participating member of RPTA. The amendment cycles are routine — they adjust funding levels and service expectations based on changes in ridership, operating costs, and regional transit priorities. But the number of amendments also reflects the stability of the partnership: Glendale has remained a member of the regional transit system for more than a decade, providing consistent bus service to West Valley residents while the broader transit network has expanded around it.
