A Chandler board weighed whether a neighbor's hedge counts as a regulated “landscape screen” under the city's zoning code. The Board of Adjustment heard an appeal asking it to overturn a ruling that the seven-foot height limit for fences and walls does not cover plants; the case grew out of a dispute between two homeowners.

Three cities dealt with board and commission seats. Scottsdale's council took up nominations for 17 vacancies, with final appointments scheduled for Sept 22; Phoenix had a round of Mayor and Council appointments on its meeting agenda, listed as Attachment A; and Chandler is set to review a new batch of applicants, including a 30-year resident recommended by Councilwoman Jennifer Hawkins.

Maricopa County's Planning and Zoning Commission heard five county cases. They included a 40-acre police sniper range southeast of Vekol Valley Road and Interstate 8, a 73-acre distribution center and its companion rezoning in Tonopah, a 25-year permit extension for a Mesa-area cell tower, and a fiber-optic compound near Wickenburg.

Other boards took up city rules and building plans. Mesa's Planning and Zoning Board reviewed a rewrite of its historic preservation rules and new design guidelines; Tempe's Development Review Commission took up a 376-unit mixed-use project; Chandler's planners are set to look at a 16-home subdivision and an adult day care; Fountain Hills has a hearing on a new cell tower ordinance; Tolleson took up a Costco rezoning; and Avondale is set to hear a 25-acre plan change.
