Maricopa County planners are weighing a 40-acre police sniper training range in the Vekol Valley, southeast of Vekol Valley Road and Interstate 8. Staff recommend approval with conditions for the Shadow Country Police Shooting Range, which would stay closed to the public and cap training at 19 people on site at a time.

Scottsdale would accept a stack of public safety grants at its Sept. 22 meeting. They include up to $600,000 for mobile command vehicle equipment, $553,808 for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear training and gear, $150,000 for DUI enforcement overtime, $80,000 for targeted traffic enforcement, $70,620 for two handheld drug identification devices, $70,000 for pedestrian and bicycle safety overtime, and $55,500 for a threat liaison officer program.

Chandler would place 12 school resource officers in three school districts, extend cancer screening to its police officers, and renew up to $600,000 in police uniforms and duty gear. Phoenix would amend its school resource officer ordinance, ask for money for its crime lab, amend a state forensic science grant, and amend a justice software contract.

Mesa would spend up to $260,000 a year for on-site support of body-worn camera redaction and raise a state IT staffing contract limit, while El Mirage would buy five new police SUVs for $255,260.75 and five police radios for $41,245.07. The rest of the week is a mix of Axon body cameras and video storage in Tempe, hazardous materials manuals, court reporting services, in-building radio coverage, and unarmed security services in Districts 7 and 8, plus homeland security grants in Surprise and traffic safety data sharing in Tucson. Taken together, the week mostly funds police staffing, equipment, and emergency communications across the Valley.
