Maricopa County planners back an 18.4-acre battery storage site near Buckeye, recommending approval with conditions for land about 640 feet east of Broadway Road and Tuthill Road. The city of Buckeye's comment letter raised no objection. The project would store and release power through battery systems when demand spikes — an industrial use in an area the county's own growth plan calls rural.

Two other land-use calls are also on the docket. A plan change in the Harquahala Valley would move a long list of owners, including the Arizona State Land Department, from Rural Development Area to Utilities, with a related zone change behind it. Near the Hassayampa River, about 61 acres would become Industrial Park under the Speros Baseline request, paired with a rezoning to an industrial district; both Speros cases were pushed to Nov. 5.

Two smaller planning cases round out the county docket: the Eagle Nest Airpark request in Aguila moved to Dec. 3 over a public notice error, and Happy Valley Commercial is a wording fix to conditions the supervisors approved Sept. 2. On the money side, the Oct. 13 Industrial Development Authority agenda included up to $74.8 million in apartment notes for District at Laveen and a grant request from the Arizona Housing Acceleration Fund, while the HOME Consortium's Oct. 15 agenda had 2026 CHDO funding adjustments and the program-year 2027 funding notice schedule.

The Board of Adjustment's Oct. 15 docket is a run of variance requests: a Desert Hills garage, a New River hillside house, a Buckeye carport, a Sun City addition, an RV shade structure and a New River corral. County risk trust trustees also weigh a settlement in Watt v. Sheridan and another in Peragine v. Maricopa County. The through-line: who gets to build what, and where.
