24. RECOGNITION FOR RECEIPT OF A NATIONAL AWARD The American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) recognized Maricopa County Adult Probation Deputy Chief of Administrative Services Michael P. Cimino as the APPA Member of the Year during the APPA conference held in Los Angeles in July 2015. Deputy Chief Cimino received the APPA Member of the Year award in recognition of his significant contributions in serving APPA and his deep commitment to both the profession of probation and parole and the ideals of a just and safe society. Over the past few years, Deputy Chief Cimino served admirably in leadership roles at three national APPA conferences: • Local Host Chair of the 2013 APPA winter training institute in Phoenix. • Program Chair of the 39th annual APPA conference in New Orleans. • Program Co-Chair of the 40th annual APPA training institute in Los Angeles. Deputy Chief Cimino has provided important trainings at the national level for community corrections officers and leaders. He teaches twice a year at the National Institute of Corrections’ Orientation for Probation and Parole Executives, presented at the APPA Leadership Institute in Jan. 2014, and conducted a webinar for APPA. Among his substantial contributions in Maricopa County, Deputy Chief Cimino was instrumental in: • A collaborative project with Arizona State University and the Phoenix Police Department that developed new awareness, training, and tools specifically for probation officers related to human trafficking. • The development and implementation of competency-based approaches in performance appraisals and promotions consistent with evidence-based practices. - In 2012, the National Association of Counties (NACo) recognized the Field Officer Performance Evaluation with a NACo Achievement Award, which is given to recognize innovation in a county government program.
