The Civil Rights Act of 1968 (The Fair Housing Act), the Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988, and 24 CFR 5.105(a)(2) ensure full and fair access to housing opportunity and makes it unlawful to discriminate in the sale or rental of housing on the basis of the characteristics as prescribed by the law. The Fair Housing Act covers all real estate related transactions including the sale or rental of housing, insurance, appraisals, lending, redlining, block busting, and, due to the civil rights issues, hate-related crimes. It is also unlawful to retaliate against a person who exercises their rights under the law, or any person who assists them in exercising their rights. Maricopa County is a recipient of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grants. HUD program activities are administered by the Human Services Department – Housing and Community Development Division. Promoting Fair Housing initiatives is a HUD mandate for areas that receive HUD grants. (C-22-17-057-M-00)
