16. SUPPLEMENTAL BENEFITS PLAN FOR DEPUTY RECEIVING CRITICAL INJURIES IN THE LINE OF DUTY Per A.R.S. 38-961, authorize the use of a supplemental benefits plan to compensate Sheriff’s Deputy, Ruben Garcia, who was critically injured in the line of duty on January 8, 2013 during a traffic stop. Deputy Garcia suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including shots to his face. His injuries require multiple surgeries which will require time off for healing and recovery. The Sheriff’s Office will work closely with the County Attorney’s Office and Total Compensation to ensure the statutory requirements are met. The cost of this statutorily-mandated compensation will be paid from the General Fund (100) and will include the deputy’s full salary plus the employer will pay the employee portion of his retirement contribution while the plan is in effect. If any workers compensation checks are issued to the employee, they will be returned to the County. (C-50-13-051-M-00)
