Program Information Summaries 
 
Head Start Recruitment  
During March 2023, the Head Start Birth to Five staff participated in three community 
events to recruit children for the program. Staff provided more than 250 families with 
information about the Head Start program and helped more than 10 families complete 
pre-registration forms. 
 
Opioid Education  
Head Start Birth to Five staff participated in a presentation by Terros Health on opioid 
addiction. Staff was trained on the signs and symptoms of opioid use and overdose and 
how to use Narcan, a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose. Upon 
completion, staff received a certificate and a Narcan 2 pack. 
 
Phoenix Zoo Field Trip 
More than 175 children and family members in the Early Head Start Home-Based 
program visited the Phoenix Zoo. Each family received a zoo animal scavenger hunt 
packet containing three cards with zoo animals. After children found the animals, each 
identified what sound the animal made, what the animal eats, and something unique 
about the animal. Head Start funds were used to pay the admission fee for children, family 
members, Birth to Five staff, and a snack for the children.  
 
Creating a Partnership 
Head Start Birth to Five staff met with Central Arizona Shelter Services Vista Colina 
(Sunnyslope area) staff to develop a referral process for enrolling families who are 
experiencing homelessness. The referral process will fast-track families experiencing 
homelessness who are automatically eligible for Head Start services.
