Attachment D Program Information Summaries Gurian Conference 2021 On August 2 and 3, 150 teachers and caseworkers attended a conference hosted by the Gurian Institute at the Phoenix Convention Center. Attendees learned strategies to support children and adults experiencing issues due to the pandemic, ways for parents to help nurture their children, and how to create an equitable learning environment for all children. 2021 First 1,000 Days The week of August 2 through 6, five staff in the Early Head Start program virtually attended the 2021 First 1,000 Days! Early Head Start Conference hosted by the Region 9 Head Start Association. The theme "Nurturing You, Nurturing Them" provided attendees with content regarding taking care of others while taking care of ourselves. The four content tracts included: wellness, teaching and learning, environments, and leadership. Staff will utilize the information and resources obtained from this conference when working with parents, coaching teachers, and practicing self-care. Region 9 Head Start Association On August 23, Deputy Human Services Director Patricia Kirkland was seated on the Region 9 Head Start Association's governing board. Region 9 advocates for Head Start programs in Arizona, California, Nevada, Hawaii, and islands in the Pacific Region. Participation on the board gives the City of Phoenix Head Start Birth to Five program a voice at the regional level for advocacy, innovation, and ensuring high-quality services for children and families.
