Ms. Julien, On behalf of Phoenix Children’s, I write to voice our support for the Phoenix Scholar House project, a proposed living-learning community in Phoenix. The development will address a critical need by combining housing with educational opportunities for parents and children. As a healthcare organization, we are acutely aware of the impact that the shortage of affordable, sustainable housing options has had on the families in our community. The Phoenix Scholar House will offer Phoenix families a critical option for safe, sustainable housing. In addition, parents participating in the program will be supported with guidance and resources as they pursue their post-secondary education. This will help ensure that participants who complete the program will not only be able to achieve their career goals but will be better prepared to fulfill their housing goals upon completion of the program. This program is proven to lift families out of poverty and into self- sufficiency, a critical determinant of long-term health of parents and children. Phoenix Children’s Hospital is grateful your efforts to increase economic and educational opportunities for the parents and families in our community. The development will address a critical need by combining housing, family services, and educational opportunities for parents and children. I spent my whole working career in the provision of quality housing for people with lower incomes and continue this work today as a member of the board of directors for ARM of Save the Family. The mission of ARM is to place working poor families and individuals in affordable housing and offer supportive services to help them develop and maintain their own self-sufficiency. The Family Scholar House model fits well with both the ARM mission of affordable housing and our goal of self-sufficiency. The program has proven successful in other locations and two-thirds of Family Scholar House participants have chosen healthcare professions.
