FY 2027 Congressional Directed Spending: State Route 85 and Broadway Road Application – 
Summary Recap 
Project Description:   
The City of Buckeye seeks to address the safety concerns at the intersection of SR 85 and Broadway 
Road by submitting a grant application that entails installing a traffic signal at each intersection, 
widening Broadway Road to provide two eastbound and westbound through lanes through the 
intersection for the creation of northbound and southbound turn lanes, installation of conduit and fiber 
optic cables for traffic signal timing optimization, installation of Wrong Way Vehicle Detection 
Equipment, and the installation of overhead Variable Message Signs that are connected to the ADOT 
Traffic Management Center to allow messages to be displayed to drivers to warn them of potential 
hazards. This project is currently in the CIP plan.

Plans Once Grant Expires:  
 After all grant funds have been expended, any future maintenance for this intersection will become a 
part of the Public Works Department’s budget. 
 
Objectives and Expected Outcomes  
 The objective is to provide increased roadway safety at SR 85 and Broadway Road for all roadway 
users. 
 The expected outcome is a reduction in the number of crashes and fatalities through the installation 
of traffic signals and Variable Message Signs.  
 Another expected outcome is a reduction in traffic-related emissions through the installation of 
integrated traffic signal timing optimization.
