Council to take action to ratify and approve the submission of a $227,101 Invasive Plant Grant
application through the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management for the prevention, control,
and eradication of non-native invasive plants and noxious weeds on approximately 500 acres of Skyline
Regional Park.
SUMMARY
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The City of Buckeye seeks to address the current non-native invasive plants and noxious weeds that are
negatively impacting Skyline Regional Park's ecological health through the submission of a grant
application that supports the removal of non-native invasive plants and noxious weeds to maintain
Skyline Regional Park's ecological health and beauty. The grant request is for $200,000 with a $27,101
required City of Buckeye match.
BENEFITS:
This grant, if awarded, will jump start the removal of non-native invasive plants and noxious weeks,
which will improve the ecological health and beauty of Skyline Regional Park, as well as provide safe
and enjoyable visitor experiences while inspiring conservation of natural resources and cultural heritage.
The removal of these plants and weeds will free up vital resources for native vegetation of Skyline
Regional Park, allowing native plants to thrive.
FUTURE ACTION:
After all grant funds have been expended, any future maintenance for this invasive species prevention,
control, and eradication will become a part of the Community Services Department's budget, unless
future grant opportunities arise, which the City will pursue.
FINANCIAL IMPACT STATEMENT:
The federal grant portion is $200,000 with a $27,101 match from the City of Buckeye. The total project
cost is $227,101.
CURRENT FISCAL YEAR TOTAL COST:
There are no Fiscal Year 2025 costs. The costs have been budgeted within Community Services under
Fiscal Year 2026.
