Program Information Summaries

Nutrition Trainings
• On April 1, the Head Start Birth to Five Dietitian organized a "Banana on a Stick"
food activity for twelve Parent Policy Committee members from Alhambra Head
Start, demonstrating fun, simple ways for parents to encourage their children to
eat more fruit instead of sugary, salty, or fatty snacks. All families received a kid-
friendly cookbook with easy, healthy snack recipes.
• On April 8, Head Start Birth to Five staff hosted a parent meeting at the Foothills
classroom, where parents and children participated in a food experience
workshop. Attendees received the Head Start Let’s Cook Together cookbook and
a child’s cooking set.
• On April 9, Head Start Birth to Five Caseworkers and the Dietitian led a related
food activity aligned with the family cookbooks. Parents and children made their
own trail mix using ingredients provided by the dietitian, enjoying a shared,
engaging experience.

Screening Success Story
A child at Byron Barry failed her hearing screening. The caseworker encouraged the
parent to seek an ENT referral. The parent eventually arranged it, and the child
underwent surgery to remove her tonsils and insert ear tubes on March 26. The child
returned to school on April 13 and is doing well.

Recruitment Event
On April 18, Head Start Birth to Five staff participated in a recruitment event at Kids Day
Festival/Día del Niño held at Ed and Verma Pastor Elementary School from 9:00 a.m. to
1:00 p.m. They collected over 35 pre-registrations to support Head Start enrollment,
provided information about services, and networked with other community agencies
present.
