MEMORANDUM TO:
HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
THROUGH:
BRYANT POWELL, CITY MANAGER
FROM:
EVIE MCKINNEY, CITY CLERK
SUBJECT:
RESOLUTION NO. 26-37,
CANVASS OF VOTES FOR PRIMARY ELECTION
CONDUCTED ON JULY 21, 2026,
Arizona Revised Statutes §16-642 (A) requires that the city council convene not less
than six (6) not more than twenty (20) days following an election for purposes of
canvassing the returns of the election. Arizona Revised Statutes §16-646 specifies the
information requirements of the canvass.
When the results of the canvass are determined, the City Clerk must enter upon the
records a statement known as the official canvass which must show the number of
ballots cast city wide and by precinct, the number of ballots rejected city wide and by
precinct, the office titles and candidate names, the number of votes cast city wide and
by precinct for each candidate, and the number of active registered voters in the city.
Even though the law does not specify that the canvass must be done as a resolution,
most Arizona cities and towns use a resolution format.
Since Apache Junction is located in both Maricopa and Pinal Counties, the information
needed for the canvass has to be collected from both jurisdictions. At this time the final
results have not been submitted by Pinal County. These numbers are to be provided on
Monday, August 3, 2026. These final results, along with the Maricopa County results,
will be shared at the regular council meeting on August 4, 2026.
