PROCLAMATION
NATIONAL SUICIDE AWARENESS AND PREVENTION MONTH
SEPTEMBER 2026

WHEREAS, September is National Suicide Prevention Month, in which mental health advocates,
prevention organizations, survivors, allies, and community members unite to promote suicide prevention
awareness, raise awareness of rising suicide rates, and work together to reduce the stigma surrounding
mental health; and

WHEREAS, suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, with more than
49,300 people who died by suicide in 2024, which is 1 death every 11 minutes by suicide; and

WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2024, the
prevalence of suicide thoughts and attempts across all age groups was highest among adults aged 18-25
years old, demonstrating the importance of mental health services for this age group; and

WHEREAS, suicidal thoughts can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, race, orientation,
income level, religion, profession, or background, and it is crucial to recognize that mental health
challenges are universal; and

WHEREAS, the City of El Mirage publicly supports those who work in the fields of mental
health, crisis services, education, and public safety, recognizing their crucial role in suicide prevention and
mental health advocacy; and

WHEREAS, we encourage all residents of El Mirage to educate themselves on mental health
awareness and support one another through life’s challenges, and to seek help from a friend, trusted adults,
or lifeline resources to get help during difficult moments.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Alexis Hermosillo, Mayor of El Mirage, do hereby proclaim the month
of September 2026 as National Suicide Prevention Month in the City of El Mirage and encourage all
citizens to support the efforts of organizations that provide education, outreach, and support in the fight
against suicide.
