Program Information Summaries
Summer Health Event
In July, 12 Summer Health Events for the Head Start Birth to Five Program took place at
eight different locations, including school sites and City of Phoenix Family Service
Centers. Children participating in the program underwent screenings for height, weight,
vision, hearing, and blood pressure, conducted by health partners. Mobile community
medical units also offered on-site physical and dental exams, allowing children to
receive dental assessments, x-rays, fluoride varnish treatments, oral health education,
and comprehensive physical evaluations. Each child received an educational item to
take home. A total of 1,239 children benefited from these services.
Head Start 101 and Attendance Matters
In July, the Head Start Birth to Five Program hosted and led a series of Head Start 101 /
Attendance Matters Parent Trainings for new families, attracting over 445 participants.
Held in both English and Spanish at school sites and City of Phoenix facilities, these
sessions emphasized the importance of regular attendance and its critical impact on
student success. Visual activities demonstrated how missing just one or two days can
significantly affect a child's long-term progress. Parents learned about chronic
absenteeism, reviewed current attendance statistics, and explored Arizona’s position on
this issue.
Deer Valley Unified School District Hires New Head Start Director
The Deer Valley School District’s Educational Service Provider appointed a new Head
Start Director, who started her position on July 16. On July 23, City of Phoenix Head
Start Birth to Five staff met with her for an introductory meeting.
Recruitment Event
On July 25, Head Start Birth to Five staff attended the Adelante Back-to-School Party at
Adelante Healthcare West Phoenix. Families received backpacks and school supplies,
free well-child checks, and health and community resources. During the event,
caseworkers shared information with families about the City of Phoenix Birth to Five
Program services available in their community.
