Sunnyside to do a deep dive into desired amenities and furnishings for the reconstruction of
Ponderosa Park. In addition to the in-person conversations, an online survey was available for
those that could not attend the fun dates onsite where overarching themes through both
formats heard were gathering spaces, play spaces, walking paths and the ability to host
neighborhood events. In addition to the info and input activities, ice cream treats were served on
both dates for anyone interested, and the word in the park was the cotton candy flavor was

Invasive Weed Removal Efforts
With the support of dedicated volunteers, the
Open Space team has been hard at work removing
invasive weeds at all three Open Space properties
and along the Flagstaff Urban Trail System (FUTS)
throughout the city. This summer’s efforts
included tackling
a dense patch of
Scotch thistle and
knapweed along the Switzer Wash
Trail. Managing invasive weeds is an
ongoing effort, and volunteer support

massive Scotch thistle
The City of Flagstaff celebrated Arbor Day on August 25 with
tree-planting activities across the community. Open Space and Parks staff joined a fourth-
grade class from Marshall Elementary School to plant two Arizona ash trees near the Thorpe
Park ball fields. The trees will provide future shade,
while giving students an opportunity to study their
growth during visits throughout the school year.
Students from Summit High School planted a
young alligator juniper in their school garden and
participated in a tree-themed scavenger hunt.
At Picture Canyon, Open Space staff and Northern
Arizona Audubon led volunteers in planting
narrowleaf cottonwoods and installing protective
enclosures to prevent deer and elk from browsing
