RESOLUTION NO.  R2026-037

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YUMA, ARIZONA, DECLARING AND ADOPTING THE OFFICIAL CANVASS OF THE RESULTS OF THE PRIMARY ELECTION HELD ON JULY 21, 2026

WHEREAS, a Primary Election was held on July 21, 2026, for the purpose of nominating candidates for the November 3, 2026, General Election; and,

WHEREAS, any candidate who receives at the Primary Election, a number of votes constituting a majority of all the ballots cast, shall be declared to be elected to the office for which he/she is a candidate effective as of the date of the General Election; and, 

WHEREAS, notice of the election was duly and regularly given in time, form and manner as provided by law; voting center locations were properly established; election officers were appointed and in all respects the election was held and conducted and the votes were cast and received and the returns made and declared in the time, form and manner required by the provisions of state election law for the holding of elections in cities; and,

WHEREAS, Article IV of the Yuma City Charter and Arizona Revised Statutes §§ 16-642 and 16-646 require the City Council of the City of Yuma to canvass and declare the results of the election. 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Yuma, as follows:

SECTION 1:  The number of votes cast at each precinct and the number of votes cast in the City for the candidates are listed in Exhibit “A”, which is hereby declared and adopted as the Official Canvass.

SECTION 2: The total number of ballots cast in the City of Yuma Primary Election was 9,938.  

SECTION 3:  The names of persons voted for at the Primary Election for the office of Mayor are as follows:  

Adams, Carlos (Write-In)
Nicholls, Douglas 


SECTION 4:  The names of persons voted for at the Primary Election for the office of City Councilmember are as follows:  

Egeberg, Derek (Write-In)
Ruedas, Pricilla (Write-In)
Smith, Carol
Valenzuela, Henry 
Van Why, Ronald

SECTION 5:  The name of the person voted for at the Primary Election for the office of Presiding Municipal Judge is as follows:

Echavarria, Nohemy

SECTION 6:  Pursuant to Yuma City Charter, Article IV, Section 5, City Council further determines and declares that the following individual received a majority of the ballots cast at the Primary Election and is elected to the position of Mayor as of the date of the General Election, November 3, 2026, for the term of four years beginning January 1, 2027:

Douglas Nicholls

SECTION 7:  Pursuant to Yuma City Charter, Article IV, Section 5, City Council further determines and declares that the following individuals received a majority of the ballots cast at the Primary Election and are elected to the position of City Councilmember as of the date of the General Election, November 3, 2026, for the term of four years beginning January 1, 2027:

Carol Smith
Henry Valenzuela
Ronald Van Why

SECTION 8: Pursuant to Yuma City Charter, Article IV, Section 5, City Council further determines and declares that the following individual received a majority of the ballots cast at the Primary Election and is elected to the position of Presiding Municipal Judge as of the date of the General Election, November 3, 2026, for the term of four years beginning January 1, 2027:

Nohemy Echavarria

SECTION 9:  The City Clerk shall enter on the records of the City of Yuma a statement, known and designated as the Official Canvass, which shall recite:

The number of ballots cast in each precinct
The number of ballots rejected in each precinct
The titles of offices voted for and the names of each person voted for to fill the offices
The number of votes by precinct received by each candidate
