CITY OF BUCKEYE Finance Department “FY27 Local Border Support Fund” Grant Application to the Arizona Department of Public Safety - Summary Recap Project Description: Buckeye experienced an increase in drug-related offenses of 35% and an increase in weapon offenses of 114% between 2022 and 2025, according to the Buckeye Police Department’s 2025 Annual Report. The Buckeye Police Department requires additional human resources and associated equipment and supplies to combat border-related crimes such as human, drug, and weapons trafficking, etc. Through this grant, the Buckeye Police Department will primarily focus on detaining and prosecuting individuals who are engaging in drug, human, and weapons trafficking, and other border-related criminal activities. To accomplish these activities, the Buckeye Police Department requires a Street Crimes Unit consisting of four sworn police officers, one sworn police Sergeant, one narcotics detection and suspect apprehension canine, and five vehicles, equipment, and supplies. If awarded, the grant covers a 24-month period. Project Cost: $ 2,080,300 (over a 24-month period) Required Match: $ 0 (over a 24-month period) Grant Amount: $ 2,080,300 (over a 24-month period) Plans Once Grant Expires: If awarded, the Award Agreement will be presented to Council for budget authority, as well as the authority to accept and execute the grant award. After all grant funds have been expended and after the 24-month grant period of performance has expired, the City of Buckeye will have the option to retain and fund the four sworn police officers and one sworn sergeant positions out of the General Fund, eliminate the positions, or seek other grant funding opportunities to support the positions. Objectives and Expected Outcomes: Through the addition of a Street Crimes Unit, the Buckeye Police Department expects to see a reduction in overdose hospitalizations and deaths through the removal of deadly drugs, weapons, and perpetrators from the community. Initially, the Buckeye Police Department expects to see an increase in successful diversions, arrests, and convictions, but over time, the objective is to reduce these incidents as more offenders are removed from society via diversion or incarceration.
