Citizen Petition from Fund for Empowerment
Proposed:
e The City should test the new shower at the SOS lot to make sure the temperature of the
water never exceeds the guidelines of the American Society of Sanitary Engineering
(ASSE) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
e lf the temperature ever exceeds the guidelines of plumbing codes and anti-scald
regulations which limit hot water delivered to accessible fixtures to 120 degrees
Fahrenheit at the outlet to prevent burns and ensure safety for all users including those
with reduced mobility or sensation.
e Ifthe temperature exceeds 120 degrees, the City should correct the temperature through
means recommended by professionals in this area.
Background:
e Multiple people from the SOS are happy about the facility for showering but report that
the water is so hot most of the day, they can only take a shower in the middle of the
night.
e Most plumbing codes and safety precautions set the maximum hot water temperature at
120 degrees fahrenheit for plumbing fixtures like sinks showers and bathtubs to prevent
scalding.
e At 120 it takes about five minutes to burn. Higher temperatures such as 140 degrees can
cause severe burns in seconds. Therefore limiting the temperature to follow the ASSE
and CPSC guidelines is important to prevent scaiding injuries.
e The ADA requires that plumbing fixtures in accessible facilities be safe and usable for
individuals with disabilities. While ADA standards to not specify and exact maximum
temperature, compliance is generally achieved by following plumbing and consumer
safety guidelines.
