Board Action 1. MARICOPA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS DISTRICT 4 VACANCY Accept the resignation of Max W. Wilson, Maricopa County Supervisor, District 4, effective March 11, 2013, and appoint a qualified elector to fill the District 4 vacancy. (C-06-13-350- 9-00) Supervisor Barney noted his disappointment at the retirement of Supervisor Max Wilson, saying he was sorry not to have had the opportunity of serving on the Board with him for more than a few weeks. Supervisor Wilcox noted that she and Supervisor Wilson hadn’t always agreed - he was a business man and she a politician, but she said he was always a gentleman and they could usually talk and work out any disagreements. She mentioned the tributes given him at the County Supervisors Association meeting and added that the Apache Nation gave him a turquoise bolo tie as they sent him off to enjoy his retirement. The Chairman called for nominations to select a qualified elector to fill the Supervisor’s vacancy in District 4. Supervisor Barney nominated Mr. Clint Hickman. Supervisor Wilcox explained that many good people living in District 4 had applied and been interviewed and many, including Mr. Hickman, were very qualified to serve the residents of that district. She said she has known Mr. Hickman’s family for many years and felt he is a “true west-sider” and would be an excellent and well-informed addition Special Meeting Minutes Thursday, March 21, 2013 Page 2 of 2 to the Board. Supervisor Chucri said he had been surprised and gratified at the number of talented people who were interested in filling the vacancy, adding that many were already serving the County in other capacities. He agreed that Clint Hickman would be a well- qualified addition to the Board. Supervisor Barney noted that at one point there had been 18 candidates and the final choice had been made from a field of 16 very capable and qualified people. He felt the interest shown was a great tribute to Maricopa County. He added that it had been a privilege to interact with those who interviewed. Chairman Kunasek recalled feeling some apprehension years ago when the Board appointed him to fill a District 3 vacancy following the retirement of Supervisor Betsey Bayless. He noted that his apprehension has been replaced with appreciation at how well the process actually works. Motion to appoint Clint Hickman to succeed Max Wilson as the District 4 Supervisor by Supervisor Barney, seconded by Supervisor Chucri. Ayes: Kunasek, Barney, Chucri, Wilcox and Clerk McCarroll Mr. Hickman accepted the appointment and said he has known Max Wilson for many years and knew he was fair, honest and careful with public monies. He told the residents of District 4 that he would remember that he had been appointed and not elected as Max had been, and added that he would not be too shy to call Max to learn his viewpoint on issues that had arisen during his years in office.
