EXHIBIT A
Master of Public Health Field Training
The objective of the Master of Public Health (MPH) supervised field training experiences is to
allow students to synthesize the knowledge and skills developed during the academic portion of
their program in a practical application setting. The field training experiences are of various
types depending upon student interest, the student’s MPH concentration, and the programs,
services, and opportunities available at a field training site. The MPH concentration areas
include biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, health behavior, and health services
administration. Students may work on a specific project during the field training and/or
participate in ongoing activities of a site, as may be appropriate. Students, for example, could
work in a biostatistics consulting lab, work with a public health agency administrator, analyze an
agency’s data set, participate in a community needs assessment, participate in an environmental
assessment, conduct a program evaluation, or assist in a health behavior education program.
Students must complete 120 hours (3 credits) of field training in a semester, but may choose to
complete up to 240 hours (6 credits) of field training. There is no prescribed field training
schedule as long as the required hours are completed. It may be useful to schedule students
regularly, such as 10 or 20 hours per week. There is no expectation of student compensation for
their field training experience.
At the placement site locations, students have field site supervisors who provide students with
guidance and support, enable students to become familiar with the public health goals and
activities of the organizations where students are placed, and provide the student’s faculty
advisor with an evaluation of student’s performance. Students also evaluate their field training
experiences. Students have faculty advisors to provide guidance and assistance to students
during the field training, review evaluations and student’s PowerPoint slide-set, and assign
grades.
