We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to Preservation Archaeology. There is a unique opportunity to purchase a 40-acre land parcel in 0 Maricopa County just downstream from Gillespie Dam. This land has abundant and dramatic liii petroglyphs, ancient irrigation canals, and scatters of Patayan pottery. The Patayan petroglyphs and pottery reflect the ancestral ties of the modern Piipaash community members of the SRPMIC and the Gila River Indian Community. The precontact canals and many of the petroglyphs also reflect the Huhugam, ancestors of all of the Four Southern tribes. The goal of this grant is to ensure the long-term protection of these irreplaceable cultural resources. El Archaeology Southwest was founded 30 years ago. We are experienced in archaeological site [hi protection, and we have the personnel and financial resources to ensure long-term protection. El We look forward to working with Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community to preserve this FI important area of tribal history. 0 Please feel free to contact me directly regarding any aspects of this proposal. 0 Respectfully yours, William H. In the description provide a summary of the relevant experience, administrative activity, and program development related to the grant request. In 2018, Archaeology Southwest purchased for $100,000 a 40-acre parcel in Maricopa County in order to preserve the densest portion of the Gillespie Dam Narrows Petroglyph Complex. The parcel also preserves precontact and historic era irrigation canals and surface evidence of Patayan pottery and features. These archaeological features continue southward to the adjacent 40-acre parcel. Archaeology Southwest has a purchase option on this adjacent parcel for the same price of $100,000. We request grant support for $100,000 in order to complete that purchase by mid-January 2020, when the purchase option expires. Archaeology Southwest will protect both of these site areas for the future. We will secure the property, and we will ensure that monitors from the Arizona Site Stewards Program, Salt River and other tribal members, and occasional special guided tours will have access. Archaeology Southwest has an established program of site ownership and of holding conservation easements. Our protected lands in fee ownership have a current value of $349,000. To ensure proper care for these properties, we have a permanent endowment dedicated to this purpose that is currently approximately $230,000 that ensures that we can monitor our properties on a regular basis. We are members of the Land Trust Alliance, and we carry an insurance policy through them that ensures that we can defend our property rights from incursions or other threats. For this property, a donor has pledged $30,000 to our permanent endowment. Thus we are confident that we can meet our commitment to the long-term protection of this property and its irreplaceable cultural resources. What percentage of the grant request are Direct Costs of the programming and Indirect Costs, respectively? The grant request is 100 percent Direct Costs, no Indirect Costs are included. Define the Project Category and/or relevant sub-category: Cultural and Environment Beginning Date of Project: January 6, 2020 End Date of Project: February 28, 2020 **Attach Detailed Budget—See Final Page** Geographic Area to be served: Maricopa County Amount of 12% Request: $100,000 If the amount of funding received is less than the amount needed for the project, do you have other funds to complete the project? (Please Explain): Archaeology Southwest expended all of our available funds to purchase the initial 40-acre parcel. Thus, without full support, it is unlikely we would be able to complete this project. As part of the purchase of the first 40-acre parcel, we did receive a commitment for a $30,000 endowment gift that will support the long-term monitoring and protection of both parcels, which are immediately adjacent to one another. If you receive SRPMIC 12% funding, how will it be spent? (Check One): Monthly Quarterly XXX Lump Sum List any SRPMIC 12% funds you have received in the past. If the organization has received funding through the SRPMIC 12% Gaming Grant Program for five consecutive years, they will be required to submit a comprehensive report of grant funding toward the stated program objectives and mission of the organization. In addition, you will be asked to provide a formal presentation to the 12% Gaming Grant Committee prior to the awarding of any additional funding. Archaeology Southwest has never received SRPMIC 12% Gaming Grant Program funds. List any other 12% grant funds your organization may be seeking from other Tribal Governments in 2019-2020. Archaeology Southwest has been notified that we will receive a $35,000 grant in the fall of 2019 from the Gila River Indian Community’s 12% Gaming Grant Program in order to document the ancient Komatke Trail that connected the area near the junction of the Salt and Gila rivers to the area of Gila Bend, Arizona. That trail is at least 1200 years old, and it is an important part of the cultural landscape of the Gillespie Dam Narrows Petroglyph Complex. List any other funds you have received from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (Enterprises Included) and identify the amount and the source: None Has your organization ever applied for and received any local, state or federal grants? If so, please detail. Yes. Archaeology Southwest has four current grants that are briefly described. 1. National Science Foundation (Federal): cyberSW is a project to develop a large database that pulls together information about a wide range of archaeological sites across the US Southwest and Mexican Northwest. Amount of three-year award: $357,000. 2. National Science Foundation (Federal): Research Experience for Undergraduates to support a Preservation Archaeology Field School in partnership with the University of Arizona School of Anthropology. Amount of three-year award: $309,000. 3. National Endowment for the Humanities (Federal): Grant awarded to Aaron Wright to document previously identified archaeological sites—settlements and petroglyphs and geoglyphs—in an area of precontact Patayan settlement. Amount of three-year award: $175,000. 4. Arizona Humanities (State): A grant to support offering Archaeology Café events to share information on regional archaeology to a public audience. Amount of one-year award: $9,000. Funding for project/programs may be based on available funding. As such, if funding were not available for the full the amount of request how would you prioritize funding. 1. If the award were close to our requested amount, we would try to negotiate with the landowner. We would request that he accept the awarded amount as a partial payment and then carry a low interest loan for the remainder so that we could complete the purchase through small monthly payments. The landowner has not been interested in such an approach in the past, so it is not certain that this strategy would be successful.
