12% Gaming Grant Program Application
Calendar Year 2020
About the Grant Program Application:
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community 12% Gaming Grant Program (“Program”) application
will serve to provide a comprehensive review of the programming requests for Arizona cities, towns,
counties, non-municipal public service organizations, and non-profit organizations selected to apply for
grant funding. It is not the intent of the Program to award grants that would benefit individuals, be used
as sponsorships, be used for religious activities, primarily fund the indirect or administrative costs of a
program/organization, or be used for the direct benefit of the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian
Community.

The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation was established in 1997 before the D-backs ever played a

three main areas of need: homelessness, indigent healthcare and children’s programs of all
types, including education and youth baseball and softball field building and renovation, outreach
programs and equipment. The organization coined the phrase “D-backs Give Back” in 2012, a
simple and concise phrase to explain the dedication and combined giving of the Arizona
Diamondbacks and the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation. To date, the organizations have
made charitable contributions totaling more than $65 million to non-profit organizations across

Project Name: Read Your Way to the Ballpark
Provide a brief description of the project being submitted to the 12% SRPMIC Grant program. In the
description provide a summary of the relevant experience, administrative activity, and program
development related to the grant request.
The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation recognizes the importance of literacy among our community’s
students. Early AZMERIT standardized tests in 2019 show more than half the students in most categories,
including third grade reading, aren’t passing the test. The Foundation also recognizes that teachers,
especially in Title 1 schools, do not have access to enough resources to tap into the full potential of their
students. On average, elementary school teachers spend $511 of their own money on classroom supplies.
The D-backs Read Your Way to the Ballpark program was designed to stimulate interest in reading through
the D-backs baseball brand while providing teachers with free resources to conduct a classroom program
that promotes literacy. The program is designed for K-6 students who can earn D-backs prizes, including a
D-backs ticket voucher, when meeting reading goals determined by their teachers. It is important for the
teachers to have flexibility to set their own goals as every classroom and every grade has different
measurable objectives. The program will also provide twenty-five (25) participating teachers with $500
grants for new books in the classroom.
The program will be executed during the school year from July through April. Initially, the Arizona
Diamondbacks Foundation will target 250 classrooms to participate during the 2019-2020 school year (30
students per class for a total impact of 7,500 students). Teachers will be provided a program kit at no cost
that includes a poster for the classroom where students can track goals, as well as a bookmark for each
student where they can track their personal goals. Students will have the opportunity to earn four different
prizes by reaching four separate reading goals as determined by the teachers. Each teacher who
participates in the program will be considered for one of twenty-five $500 grants for new books in their
classroom with priority given to Title 1 schools. In addition, participating classrooms may have the
opportunity for a classroom visit from the D-backs.
Funds received from the SRPMIC 12% Grant will cover expenses associated with the program including
prizes for the students and the teacher kits for program implementation.

What percentage of the grant request are Direct Costs of the programming and Indirect Costs,
respectively?
100% of the grant request will cover Direct Costs associated with the D-backs Read Your Way to
the Ballpark program.
