Dear Chairman Manuel:
On behalf of the children and families we serve who are faced with the diagnosis of cancer and
other life-threatening diseases, we thank the Tohono O'odham Nation for the opportunity to
submit this grant request. At this time, Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels is respectfully requesting
a $10,000 grant in support of our Moms Mentoring Program. This project will contribute to the
improved mental and physical health outcomes of moms who are caring for their children
battling cancer. Please find the required elements of the proposal below.
Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels was founded in 2012 in celebration of Amanda Hope's life.
During her three-year fight with leukemia and nine-month battle with a brain tumor, Amanda
dreamed that one day she would design a fun clothing line for kids just like her that would
provide comfort and dignity during chemo treatments. Amanda's life and dream lives on
through our Comfycozy's for Chemo apparel and our programs and services for children battling
cancer. Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels honors Amanda every day by realizing the "here and
now" needs of pediatric cancer care. Today, our programs have expanded exponentially to
meet the ever-increasing need to serve all children and families who need our help.
The mission of Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels is to bring dignity and comfort into the harsh
world of childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
Our vision is to:
• Provide Comfycozy Care gifts to all children diagnosed with cancer and other blood-
related disorders.
• Support healthcare professionals in providing person-centered care to children and their
families with empathy and understanding.
• Help families have voice and choice above the harsh protocols often present in the
healthcare system.

a) Explain the perceived need and explain how the proposal will address that need.
Roughly 1 in 6,500 children and adolescents under the age of 20 will be diagnosed with
pediatric cancer. Of those children diagnosed, Latinx children generally have poorer health
outcomes than their non-Latinx white counterparts (American Cancer Society, 2018). Themes of
two previously conducted focus groups of moms (1 in Spanish and 1 in English) both included a
sense of community support at the onset
of diagnosis and feelings of disbelief, surrealism, and helplessness, with an overwhelming
amount of information, and a need for advocacy in medical settings throughout the diagnostic
process.
Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels is respectfully requesting a $10,000 grant to support our efforts
to pilot a "Moms Mentoring Program." In partnership with Arizona State University, Amanda
Hope Rainbow Angels will provide a mentoring program for moms whose children are battling
cancer. This project will serve both Spanish and English-speaking moms. Our program will
address the needs described above by training both Spanish and English-speaking moms to
provide mentoring services to other moms of children diagnosed with cancer through the
program. A total of 16 moms will initially be trained who will then mentor/serve a total of 40
families in the first year.
This intervention- and community-building "train the trainer" model will provide maximum
benefit to moms and prove to be sustainable in the future. In the program, moms will be
provided with 4-6 hours of mentoring sessions weekly through hospital and home visits. Moms
facing the unimaginable will not even have to leave their homes — Amanda Hope Rainbow
Angels will come to them.
Trained mentors will be moms who have had children previously
battling cancer. They will have already walked this long and
difficult journey alone. Trained moms will deliver the 7-week
program that will cover the following topics:
• Introduction to the Moms Mentoring Program
• The Journey of Childhood Cancer
• Advocating for Your Child
• Advocacy in the Schools
• Familial Self Care and Social Support
• Taking Care of Me
• Closing and Looking Ahead
Working with Arizona State University, results will be evaluated to demonstrate program
impact through pre- and post- surveys that will measure increased knowledge of childhood
cancer, self-efficacy (caregiver belief in ability to use skills in the program), increased use of
advocacy strategies; and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD) to
measure decreases in caregiver depression. A post-social validity questionnaire will also be
utilized to measure satisfaction and usability of the program material. We will also collect

qualitative data such as this quote previously provided. "Thank you for supporting our special
kids and their families on their cancer journey."
The Moms Mentoring Program will provide unparalleled support and education to moms
whose children have been diagnosed with cancer. This program will improve the physical and
mental health of moms and provide support and advocacy for their children with complex
healthcare needs.
Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels' unique programs and services fill a void in our community. We
are advocates and leaders for children with cancer. We are constantly humbled and inspired by
the children and families that we help — we know that we are making a difference and that
there is so much more work to be done. There is no other program like this anywhere in
Arizona, and no mom should ever have to walk this journey alone.
b) Describe the population who will benefit from the proposal if approved.
Moms and caregivers who have children with cancer, ages 0-18, will benefit from this
proposal, if approved. Families we serve come from diverse races/ethnicities, and most
are low-income
families where parents have been faced with having to quit their jobs or scale back
because of the time that it takes to care for their medically-fragile child.
c) Include a budget of the requested funds, with the total amount requested clearly
notated.
We are requesting funding to pay for the following: $6,000 to deliver the 7-week educational
training sessions for moms; $4,000 for programmatic collateral and supplies (in English and
Spanish).
d) List any other funding requests that nave been made for this or substantially related
to proposals and provide the status of those requests.
Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels submitted a $5,000 request to The Board of Visitors for this
project as well. This application is still pending.
e) Indicate whether the entity has already received a 12% distribution from the Tohono
O'odham Nation or other Arizona tribes, along with the amount and date awarded.
Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels has not received a 12% distribution from the Tohono O'odham
Nation or any other Arizona tribes.
