Grant Award Request: $30,000
Please provide a brief description of the project being submitted to the 12% SRPMIC
Grant program.
The Heard Museum is proposing a grant request from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian
Community for the museum's K-12 Free Admissions and School Tours Program. The Free
Admissions and Tour program is critically important to increasing educational opportunities for
Arizona public schools. Arizona ranks among the lowest in the nation in terms of funding for
public school education. According to a 2018 Education Week report Arizona ranked 45th
among the 50 states in funding for K-12 education, a statistic that points to decreased
accessibility to quality education for Arizona's children.
The Heard's Free Admissions and Tour Program addresses this imbalance by allowing free
admission and tours of the museum for visiting teachers, students, and chaperones. Providing
free access to the galleries and experienced docents, specially trained in the transference of
knowledge about the museum's collections, represents an invaluable arts/education resource for
Arizona's teachers. Additionally free companion curriculum packages are available to teachers

on the Heard website to assist in pre or post visit lessons that enhance learning about American
Indian art and culture. The museum's strategic plan points to the importance of the educational
role that the Heard Museum plays and prioritizes efforts to increase student attendance. In
FY2017, 218 school tours were conducted that served 10,590 students (31% of these whom were
from Title I schools) and increase of 6% over the previous year and a trend that continues in
FY2018.
Teacher feedback consistently demonstrates that the Heard's tours met their educational goals
by introducing their students to the history, cultures, and art of American Indians, especially the
tribes located in Arizona. All teachers are surveyed regarding their visit. One teacher observed
the positive outcomes of the Heard's school tours: "This is our second year touring the Heard to
go along with our paper on the Phoenix Indian School. Both years the students have not only
gathered information on the school, but also insight into Native cultures beyond what we talk
about in the classroom."

The Free Admissions and Tours program would be continued with partial funding from Salt River
Pima-Maricopa Indian Community through a commitment from the museum's operating fund
and ongoing efforts to secure additional funding. Offering access to students is a critical
initiative for the Heard. Funding strategies continue to be a combination of donations made by

corporations and foundations that support youth education programs, general operating
funding from the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture and Arizona Commission on the Arts, and
funds garnered from the Heard's earned income. Currently the museum has requests for
funding for this program out to the following organizations: Virginia M. Ullman Foundation
(confirmed), Arizona Lottery (confirmed), Cardinals Charities, Cox Charities, Phoenix Suns
