Project Name: Shade Structures for the Urban Farm Program at St. Vincent de Paul
Grant Award Request: $75,000
Please provide a brief description of the project being submitted to the 12% SRPMIC Grant
program.
A generous grant of $75,000 from the Community would enable St. Vincent de Paul's Urban
Farm Program to purchase and install shade structures.
The Urban Farm Program is a component of St. Vincent de Paul's "Feeding the Hungry"
initiative. The UFP operates community gardens in the middle of a food desert. The program
includes gardening sites in downtown Phoenix and Mesa. The largest plot, on the main
campus, is built on a two-and-a-half-acre lot, and harvests an average of 600-800 pounds of
fresh, organic produce per week. Produce harvested from all three sites is incorporated into
our dining rooms and food boxes, providing accessible, organic, nutritious food directly to
those we serve.
Our two largest farm sites receive abundant, direct sunlight; shade structures will allow SVdP
to take full advantage of the Maricopa County growing season. We currently grow fruits and
vegetables year round, but as you may guess, the summer months limit the kinds of produce
we can successfully grow. During the worst of the summer, we cultivate plants and crops
native to desert climates, but these can be more difficult to incorporate into the meals we
serve our guests in our dining rooms and through food boxes. Effective, environmentally
sound shade structures would allow us to grow more produce for consumption by the food-
insecure Arizonans we serve.
In addition to providing larger amounts of healthy food for our neighbors in need, the timing
of this request is driven by our ability to leverage additional community resources and
partners. SVdP is moving into the third year of a partnership with the ASU School of
Sustainability and the Walton Sustainable Solutions Initiative, which allows us to harness the

expertise of faculty, researchers, and graduate-level students to design the best, low-impact
shade system to support our farms and harvests for years to come.
Beginning Date of Project: October 1, 2018 End Date of Project: September 30, 2019
Geographic Area to be served: Maricopa County
Please attach budget on how funds will be allocated.
Total Amount for Project: $125,000 Amount of 12% Request: $75,000
(No Multi-Year Request will be accepted)
If the amount of funding received is less than the amount needed for the project, do you have
other funds to complete the project? (Please Explain):
We have postponed purchasing or installing shade structures because other community
needs arose and were more pressing. With some of those now funded, we are turning back to
needs like these shade structures.
A generous grant from SRPMIC in any amount would be applied to the Urban Farm Program.
In the case of partial funding, SVdP would seek alternative and supplemental funding from
other supporters to ensure the shade structure is made a reality.
Should SVdP receive a grant from SRPMIC, we would be honored to display the name of the
community on the shade structures. We currently have no other funds for any portion of this
proposed project.
If you receive SRPMIC 12 % funding, will it be spent (Check One):

We were so grateful to be among last year's grant recipients. The 2018 Salt River Pima-
Maricopa Indian Community grant allowed us to purchase some excellent used vehicles to
replace some of our aging fleet.
List any other 12 %Tribal Grant funds your organization may be seeking from other Tribal
Governments in 2018-2019.
SVdP is not seeking tribal grant funds from any other tribal governments and has no plans to
do so in 2018-19.

List any other funds you have received from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community
(Enterprises Included) and identify the amount and the source:
We received a $40,000 grant last year (CY2018) from 12% Tribal Grant funding which allowed
us to purchase some excellent used vehicles. We're very grateful for what your grant made
possible at SVdP. Thank you!
Funding for project/programs may be based on available funding. As such, if funding were not
available for the full the amount of request how would you prioritize funding.
1. Purchase of shade structures would be scaled (by individual site) and/or postponed. If
partially funded, we would endeavor to raise supplemental funds from additional SVdP
supporters.
