Project Name: Birth to Five Helpline/Fussy Baby Program
Grant Award Request: $25,000
Please provide a brief description of the project being submitted to the 12% SRPMIC
Grant program.
The Birth to Five Helpline (1-877-705-KIDS (5437)) is Arizona's only toll-free line dedicated to
responding to questions and concerns about early child development. The program's objectives
are to support parents/caregivers of young children who are calling with questions and
concerns, and to prevent child abuse. Topics frequently addressed include sleep and feeding
questions or problems, fussiness and "colic," toilet teaching, general child development (e.g.
"Should my baby be..." crawling, walking, using two word sentences, etc.), behavioral challenges,
environmental safety, and common health issues. Very often, callers report multiple concerns
and needs and complex family circumstances which require considerable time to adequately
address.
Callers to the Helpline talk to a caring, highly-trained early childhood specialist who listen to
each caller and consider the specific child's development and history, the caller's parenting style,
and their family and cultural values. With an average call time of 20 minutes, the Helpline
specialists are able to listen to the caller's concerns, explore at length what may be causing the
problem, work with the caller to develop an action plan, and provide much-needed reassurance
and support. The specialists are also able to connect callers to community resources and
additional support when needed, including Southwest Human Development's more than 40
programs and services — providing access to a wide range of early childhood experts. The
Helpline operates Mon-Fri, 8 am to 8 pm and can be accessed by phone, website
(www.birthtofivehelpline.or,g), email, or text. Assistance in English/Spanish is always available.
The Helpline is available to all Arizona parents, caregivers and professionals without regard to
location, ethnicity, language, age, income or any other criteria.

The Fussy Baby Program is a service of the Birth to Five Helpline and provides telephone support
throughout Arizona and home visitation services in Maricopa County to assist parents of babies
they experience as crying excessively, difficult to comfort and/or having trouble feeding or
sleeping. The goal of the Fussy Baby Program is to help parents feel more confident and
competent in their ability to care for their infant, even though they may be having a difficult
time in the beginning.
