12% Gaming Contributions Application
Date of Application: July 11, 2018
Organization Name: St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance (St. Mary's)
Contact Person: Lisa Notaro
Email Address: lanotaro@firstfoodbank.org
Phone: (602) 343-3146
Organization Mailing Address: 2831 N. 31st Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85009
Project Name: New Kids Café Meal Delivery Van
Grant Award Request: $60,000
Please provide a brief description of the project being submitted to the 12% SRPMIC Grant
program.
The need that St. Mary's addresses through its Kids Café Program is hunger and the negative
impact it has on children's health, well-being and academic achievement. Feeding America
reports that nearly one in three Arizona children live in poverty. The state's hunger rate also is
higher than national averages: 17.8% compared to 15.9% nationally. Children and adults are at a
high risk of hunger-related health issues. For example, the report, "What are the Connections
Between Food Insecurity and Health?," states that, without enough nutritious food, the body is
at risk of illness, which can lead to days of missed school, resulting in children falling farther
behind in their classes and putting them at risk of dropping out. The report, "Hunger And Its
Very Real Effects On Children,' states that prolonged hunger has many detrimental effects on a
child's well-being. It can lead to depression and anxiety - the latter when they worry about when
they will eat again. Chronically-hungry children also are twice as likely to struggle to focus in
school because of lethargy or discomfort from being hungry (Hunger, 2018).
That is why St. Mary's conducts its Kids Café Program, a meal service program that provides
children, ages 5-18, who participate in after school enrichment programs or attend a summer
feeding site, with a free, nutritious meal in a safe, accessible and nurturing environment that
follows USDA federal nutrition guidelines. St. Mary's collaborates with schools, community
centers, neighborhood groups, family health centers and other social service and behavioral
health organizations, which receive the meals from St. Mary's and serve them to the children
they assist. The meals are prepared at St. Mary's and delivered to the partners' sites Monday
through Friday. Hot meals are kept warm by placing them in insulated food storage units,
manufactured by Cambro, before loading them into the delivery vans. Last year, St. Mary's
served 1,103,013 after school and summer meals at 246 program sites for more than 5,200
children.

Because of the tremendous demand, we expect to increase the number of hot and cold meals
provided to at least 2.3 million by the end of Fiscal Year 2019/20. Of these, up to 25% will be
hot meals. That is why we are seeking a grant of $60,000 from SRPMIC to purchase a new Kids
Café Van that will be used for transporting thousands more hot meals each day to hungry
children. The program activities include getting three quotes for a new van, selecting and
purchasing the van, wrapping it with the SRPMIC name and logo (with your permission) and
putting it into service to begin delivering hot meals to low-income, food-insecure children.
The target population to be served is low-income, food-insecure children in Maricopa County.
The demographics of children served are 39% Hispanic, 43% White, 13% African American, 2%
Native American, 2% Asian and 1% Other. St. Mary's serves people from all ages and genders.
More than 85% will come from families living at or below the National Poverty Level, which for a
family of four is having an annual income of $24,450 or less.
St. Mary's will evaluate the program through qualitative and quantitative assessments.
Quantitative data to be gathered will include the van quotes and receipt, the total number of
meals provided to the partner agencies and the number of children assisted. Qualitative data is
collected through formal and informal surveys with the partner agencies and program
beneficiaries to determine the impact the food had on the children's health, well-being and
academic achievement, and the increase in the number of hot meals that St. Mary's was able to
provide through the new vehicle. All partner agencies are visited twice annually for evaluation
purposes to ensure they are receiving and providing the meals according to the agreed-upon
procedures.
Beginning Date of Project: 7/1/18 End Date of Project: 6/30/19

List of any SRPMIC 12% funds you have received in the past. St. Mary's received a grant of

dramatically increase the amount of food it could receive and provide for hungry Arizonans.
List any other 12 %Tribal Grant funds your organization may be seeking from other Tribal
Governments in 2018-2019. St. Mary's requested a grant from the Gila River Indian Community
for its Community Kitchen Program, which provides vocational training for homeless people,
formerly incarcerated people, and other vulnerable individuals who are struggling to find
employment.
List any other funds you have received from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community
(Enterprises Included) and identify the amount and the source: St. Mary's has not received any
other type of funding from SRMPIC.
Funding for project/programs may be based on available funding. As such, if funding were not
available for the full the amount of request how would you prioritize funding. St. Mary's one
and only priority is using the full amount awarded to purchase the new vehicle.
Which municipal governmental entity will serve as your pass through or accept 12% funds on
your behalf? Maricopa County will serve as St. Mary's pass-through and accept the funds.
