SALT RIVER PIMA-MARICOPA INDIAN COMMUNITY 10005 E. Osborn Road, Scottsdale, Arizona 85256 / Phone 480-362-7520 12% Gaming Contributions Application Date of Application: 7/19/18 Organization Name: United States Veterans Initiative (U.S.VETS — Phoenix) Contact Person: Michelle Jameson, Executive Director Email Address: mjameson@usvetsine.org Phone: 602-501-5548 Organization Mailing Address: United States Veterans Initiative 3507 N. Central Ave., Suite 302 Phoenix, AZ 85012 Project Name: Food for Homeless Veterans Grant Award Request: $100,000 Please provide a brief description of the project being submitted to the 12% SRPMIC Grant program. A core program of U.S NETS — Phoenix is the Veterans in Progress (VIP) transitional housing program. Over 260 homeless veterans a year receive counseling, skills development, benefit attainment, job finding, and job retention skills to increase chances of long-term success, all within the framework of a therapeutic supportive housing model. Breaking the cycle of homelessness for veterans requires addressing a variety of needs and connecting these heroes with services that are often unique to the military experience. VIP is designed to retain veterans in the program while assisting them with moving successfully from transitional to permanent housing; year after year, at least 80% of the veterans exiting our program retain permanent housing. We are pleased to share that this year, U.S.VETS — Phoenix has significantly increased its capacity to serve more veterans in need. As of October 1s t, the VIP program will be adding 66 new beds, which will double the number of veterans we are able to enroll. With this expansion comes an increased food budget, up 96% from last year. You may recall from our proposal last year that in June of 2016, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) cut the funding of 8 of 11 transitional programs in Maricopa County, putting many men, women and children back on the streets. U.S.VETS-Phoenix was one of the eight transitional programs cut; thankfully U.S.VETS did not have to put veterans out on the street, but we did sustain a significant cut to our VIP program and a gap persists today. Approximately 20% of the $500,000 budget lost was food allowance for our veterans. U.S.VETS serves veterans three meals per day 365 days a year, with a cost of $351,522 per year. U.S.VETS has increased its foundation support to recuperate this funding loss, and a $100,000 grant more will go a long way towards providing meals for more veterans in need. U.S.VETS-Phoenix has been partnering with Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) since 2016 to assist veterans with community and veterans resources for tribal members, attending tribal veteran resource events, and offering on-going support to veterans in partnership with the SRPMIC Veterans Department. U.S.VETS also has the ability to house tribal members at its facility and assist with VA benefit attainment, workforce connections, acquisition of benefits and referrals, as well as providing a supportive environment for overcoming mental and physical barriers. U.S.VETS recognizes American Indians serve in their country's armed forces in greater numbers per capita than any other ethnic group, and they have served with distinction in every major conflict for over 200 years. U.S.VETS has been partnering with Arizona tribes to assist in bringing awareness regarding VA benefits, community resources and housing options to their well deserving tribal veterans. A continued partnership between U.S.VETS — Phoenix and SRPMIC would be an honor and our combined efforts will help transform the lives of American Indian veterans that have sacrificed so much in service to our country.
