The VMLC assists Veterans who experience crises, financial or otherwise, as they attempt to get their lives back on track. The Returning Warrior program works directly with the Phoenix VA Medical Center (VAMC) serving Veterans needing special assistance. In the last five years, the number of Phoenix VAMC outpatients has increased from 63,000 to over 91,000. Almost 15,000 of those Veterans served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Middle East. Working with the 200 VAMC case workers, Returning Warrior provides Veterans immediate assistance during times of crisis creating stability, leading to success. Based upon VAMC’s recommendations, Returning Warrior provides financial assistance for rent, utilities, transportation (including auto repairs), food, and other needs not available through Federal or State governmental assistance. The goal of the Returning Warrior program is to help Veterans hold a job, keep medical appointments, remain in their homes, put food on the table, and keep their families together. In 2017, the Returning Warrior program helped 700 Veterans and their family members going through tough times. In addition, VMLC Charities supports Veterans needing assistance at the Arizona State Veterans Home, Annual Homeless Stand Down and Emergency Dental Care. During the Maricopa Stand Down event, we provide essential personal items to 210 homeless female Veterans they were otherwise unable to obtain. This invaluable assistance is making a difference. The VMLC continues to support and encourage improved living conditions for Veterans in Maricopa County. By providing financial assistance, Returning Warrior allows Arizona Veterans to focus on the truly important aspects of their lives; family, education, employment, community, and health – physical, mental, and spiritual. This timely assistance, can help Arizona Veterans avoid homelessness or another crises. The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community continues to be a real champion for helping to make our communities better. Its gracious donations have prevented Veterans facing poverty and other financial crises from experiencing homelessness or other adverse consequences. Funds received from the SRPMIC will be used to directly assist needy Veterans, as mentioned above.
