1. SPECIAL EVENT
Groundbreaking Demo Day Event of the Old Madison Street Jail.
Fields Moseley, Communications Director, welcomed and thanked everyone in
attendance. He thanked Chairman Barney, Supervisor Gates and Supervisor Hickman
for their presence. He noted tours of the 6th and 2nd floor would be given following the
speakers for those interested.
Chairman Barney recognized the following: Supervisor Hickman; Supervisor Gates;
Paul Peterson, County Assessor; Reid Spaulding, Deputy County Manager.
A video was then presented which pertained to the demolition and reconstruction of the
Old Madison Street Jail building.
Chairman Barney stated the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office vacated the building 12
years ago. Construction of the $38.4 million dollar investment building was completed
in 1985. The building was used for 20 years until the evaporative cooling system
caused issues within the construction of the building. The total expected cost for re-
purposing the building is $60-65 million with an expected opening date in the year 2020.
Bill Montgomery, County Attorney, said he was proud of the fiscal responsibility to
maximize public usage of money. He stated he is proud to be part of a team that will
maximize taxpayer dollars. The repurposing of the building will reduce the number of
buildings the County leases and put prosecutors in a safer environment.
