Training Description:
The FDA Pacific Region Retail Food Seminar provides annual training for FDA Standards. It includes any
changes in the FDA Model Food Code (which Maricopa County has adopted). If there are any changes to the
standardization field guide, that is also included in the training. The training reviews opportunities for
jurisdictions that are enrolled in the FDA program standards (of which Maricopa County is enrolled). It provides
• information on funding sources to help jurisdictions that are enrolled in the program standards. The training also
provides information on the newest science available, which is necessary for our training program. Information
from industry on food safety measures taken are also discussed. This conference provides the opportunity for
valuable networking for our employees to meet with other state, local, and federal partners. This has allowed us
in the past to hear new ideas, discuss new ideas, and exchange information that helps improve our programs.
Meeting with industry is also vital in our role as regulators and educators. It is helpful for both sides to hear from
one another and to discuss food safety.
Our training objective is to stay cuiTent with updates to the FDA code, maintain standardization, network with
other agencies and industry, and then share with our employees what we have learned (through meetings and
writing articles for our internal newsletter). Per Department policy, this must be completed within 2 weeks of the
training.

Budget Narrative (Mxinium of 1300 Characters):
The next conference is to be held in Idaho. The cost of the conference has yet to be determined, but is estimated
to be approximately $100. Maricopa County Environmental Services would like to send 4 employees to the
conference ($100 x 4 employees $400). Roundtrip airfare from Phoenix to Boise (used for estimate purposes)
is $402 per employee ($200 x 4 employees $1856). Actual airfare cost is not available this far in advance. It is
estimated that the hotel room will cost $100/night (federal per diem for lodging is $116/night in Boise during the
month of September). This would be a total cost of $1856. Maricopa County will incur the costs of meals and
incidentals for each employee (federal per diem for September is $64/day per employee). Since there are partial
travels included the total budget would be $1152 for per diem cost. Maricopa County will also cover the extra
costs that the $3000 grant does not cover.
