Screening in Centers
AECEA believes there that providing screening and education within early care and education
centers provides a unique opportunity to impart ongoing education on the importance of oral
health for children and families and promote a lifelong habit of toothbrushing. AECEA suggests
adapting the current protocol for screening in early care and education centers to require the

parent to be present by offering 10-minute “appointments” during normal pick up and drop off
times.
The new protocol would include:
1. Pre-training for early care and education center staff
2. Parent outreach
a. A flyer would go home with parents and sign-up sheet with 10-minute slots
would be available at the front desk.
3. Scheduling the screening at times that are convenient for parents to attend
a. Screening at normal drop off and pick up times (7-9am and 4-6pm)
i. There would often be enough need to schedule multiple times and days
at each center.
b. Instead of screening by classroom, etc. parents sign up for a time slot in advance
of the screening.
4. Post screening ongoing education of parents and children
Combination
Ideally, AECEA would provide training to each early care and education program before a
screening was conducted in the facility. This would allow the staff to educate parents and
children of the importance of the screening and oral health care before the screening event and
beyond.
If AECEA is contracted to schedule these trainings, we would need to determine a monthly
stipend for scheduling depending on the number sites scheduled per month or target number
of children screened. Depending on the monthly stipend, hourly training costs may be
reduced.
