At the discretion of the Sheriff’s Office, the assignments described below shall either be handled as an appointment into an unclassified position in which the incumbent’s base pay rate shall be determined using the County’s Placement in Range Policy, or designated as Management or Professional Assignments pursuant to the Maricopa County Employee Compensation Plan as long as they extend beyond 30 consecutive calendar days. Classified employees placed on management or professional assignments shall retain their classified status under the Maricopa County Employee and Law Enforcement Merit System Rules and Resolutions during the assignment. Employees may not receive a management or professional assignment at the same time they are receiving a special work assignment and may not receive more than one management or professional assignment at any given time. Executive Chiefs Subject to Board of Supervisor’s approval, the Sheriff’s Office may designate 3 employees to serve as executive chiefs. Executive chiefs who are assigned into these positions via a management assignment may receive a biweekly stipend, equivalent to the SWA pay they received prior to this career path, in addition to their base pay. Deputy Chiefs Subject to Board of Supervisor’s approval, the Sheriff’s Office may designate 8 employees to serve as deputy chiefs. Deputy chiefs who are assigned into these positions via a management assignment may receive a biweekly stipend, equivalent to the SWA pay they received prior to this career path, in addition to their base pay. Tactical Operations Unit (TOU) Subject to Board of Supervisor’s approval, the Sheriff’s Office may designate 17 Deputy Sheriffs or Sergeants to serve within the Tactical Operations Unit. TOU assignments shall be handled as professional assignments in which the employees may receive a biweekly stipend of $115.38 (approximately $3,000 annually) in addition to their base pay. Aviation Unit Subject to Board of Supervisor’s approval, the Sheriff’s Office may designate 11 Deputy Sheriffs or Sergeants to serve within the Aviation Unit. Aviation Unit assignments shall be handled as professional assignments in which the employees may receive a biweekly stipend of $115.38 (approximately $3,000 annually) in addition to their base pay. The management assignment stipend for newly assigned executive or deputy chiefs shall be determined by Employee Compensation on a case-by-case basis and shall not create inequities with current chiefs. Any employee who, at the time this plan was approved, was receiving a stipend higher than he/she would receive with the management or professional assignment pay identified above, may, at the Sheriff’s Office’s discretion, retain his/her rate until such time that the addition of management or professional assignment pay would be greater than the individual’s current stipend. For an employee whose FTE is less than 1.0, the biweekly stipends described above will be prorated based on the employee’s FTE.
