Narrative: A narrative of no more than two (2) pages describing the following:
1. The proposed program or project, and whether it is a new or continuing project;
Sojourner Center requests a grant for $15,000 from the Ft. McDowell Yavapai Nation in
order to continue providing emergency shelter and supports to those fleeing domestic
violence in Maricopa County, AZ. Since 1977 Sojourner Center has been a safe haven for
women, men, children-and most recently-pets, who are survivors of domestic violence. Each
year more than 10,000 individuals and are served in our emergency shelter, transitional
housing, and community-based services. Nearly half of those served are children; 45% of
the children are under the age of 5. Our staff and volunteers help families traumatized by
abuse begin the process of building new, violence-free lives.
Our mission is to provide a continuum of multi-cultural services to individuals and families
impacted by domestic violence in Arizona. Our vision is a world free from domestic violence.
2. The purpose of the program or project and how it meets one or more of Fort
McDowell’s funding priorities (i.e., education, public safety, health, environment,
and economic and community development);
The purpose of this grant request is to provide general support to Sojourner Center to meet
the needs of those we serve. A grant of $15,000 would equal approximately 300 nights of
care. Sojourner Center’s goal is to ensure those we serve receive services to prepare them
for self-sufficiency and a successful transition to the community. These services include:
emergency shelter; transitional housing; case management; domestic violence education;
safety planning; lay legal advocacy; a 24-hour crisis hotline; referral services; and
community outreach. We also offer a health clinic for medical and behavioral health care; life
skills; child development center; children’s support groups; educational assessment, goals
and instructional support; vocational training; and a pet companion shelter, all on-site. All
services are available to any participants, whether they are in our shelter, transitional
housing or are community-based.

Our domestic violence program meets all of the Ft. McDowell funding priorities:
Education: early childhood education to children 0-5; after school homework assistance
and tutoring to school age children, and vocational training for older teens and adults;
Public Safety: provide safe, secure, confidential rooms in our emergency shelter so
individuals can escape their abusers, and help those receiving community-based services
develop safety plans and prepare to leave their abusive relationships, if they wish;
Health: meet medical and behavioral health needs of our participants, provide healthy
meals and classes on healthy lifestyles;
Environment: care for pets, including food, shelter, vaccines, medical care as needed,
Economic: Our vocational program includes job training, placement and retention so
participants can become financially independent.
3. The need that the program or project aims to fulfill, the population targeted, and
the estimated number of people who will be served by the grant;
Sojourner Center meets the need of safety and support to those requesting domestic
violence shelter in Maricopa County. In 2017 a total of 283,170 emergency shelter nights of
care were provided to adults and children in Arizona. Sojourner Center provided 53,889
nights of care, more nights of care than any other shelter in Maricopa County. A grant from
Ft. McDowell Yavapai Nation would provide approximately 330 nights of care.
Sojourner’s targeted population is women, men, children and pets impacted by domestic
violence. In 2017 96% of families served in our emergency shelter met the federal
guidelines for poverty. The ethnic make-up of our participants in 2017: 3% American
Indian/Alaskan Native; 2% Asian; 19% African American; 42% Caucasian; 17% Hispanic,
1% Hawaiian; 11% Multi-racial; 3% other; and 2% Declined to answer.
4. The partners in the program or project, and other entities providing funding and
support (please indicate whether the organization will be submitting applications
to any other tribes);
Phoenix Children’s Hospital: medical care to children: mobile medical on-site twice weekly
Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine: medical care to adults on-site twice-weekly
Jewish Family & Children’s Service: behavioral health services for adults

announcement on social media, and provide six and 12 month reports to stakeholders.
