Total grant amount request 25000 1 / 1 Name and Contact: Nicolee Thompson, Executive Director/CEO of Mitchell Swaback Charities, Inc. Main Contact Address: Harvest Compassion Center Phoenix 4744 E. Thunderbird Road, Ste. #9 Phoenix, AZ 85032 Primary Contact: Nicolee Thompson, E.D. / CEO MSC, Inc./HCC Phone: 623-451-0688 Email: nthompson@hccfeed1.org Primary Address: Same as above Narrative: The proposed program: Mitchell Swaback Charities, Inc. the umbrella 501 c who fully funds and operates Harvest Compassion Centers (HCC); who have successfully fed, clothed and served over 23,000 families with this continuing project since 2011. Harvest Compassion Center's operate locations spreading throughout the Valley in North Phoenix, Maryvale and Chandler. HCC's are a one-stop shop food and clothing bank, just imagine a Super Walmart on a smaller scale. Because HCC's are 100% self-funded with no state/government feeding programs, HCC's are allowed to welcome anyone in the state of Arizona to come in and shop for their desired food, hygiene, baby, home and clothing items FREE of charge once every 30 days (unless a guest is homeless, then they shop whenever hungry). 100% of this grant will be used to purchase food, hygiene and baby items from our discounted partners/non-profits ensuring HCC's shelves are never bare. What makes HCC's food bank unique is our compassion, we treat every guest as our family, not as a number! We have a welcoming lobby, kids play corner where kids go home with books and toys daily, and HCC's provide personal shoppers to each guest ensuring a first-class experience is felt. Allowing complete CHOICE to all guests is a priority at HCC's, as they will never pre-package any food, hygiene or baby items for guests. The HCC's goal is to turn 'food banking' into a dignified experience and remove the stigma that is behind it. The purpose of the program and how it meets one or more of Fort McDowell’s funding priorities: The Harvest Compassion Centers meet Fort McDowell's area of service in public health. 1 in 4 children and 1 in 5 adults live with food insecurity in Arizona. Arizona ranks 3rd highest in the U.S. for child food insecurity rates with 456,760 children facing hunger daily! By providing life's necessities, HCC guests can use their food budget on rent, utilities, and transportation, allowing more families the opportunity to stay in their homes. The HCC's are 100% self-funded so they may welcome anyone in the state of Arizona to their centers for a free shopping trip. The HCC's will never qualify a guest as hungry or in-need instead, they offer love and compassion and hand out additional referrals to better help the overall quality of life of each guest. The need that the program aims to fulfill, the population targeted, and the estimated number of people who will be served by the grant: As stated above Arizona's hunger crisis has not improved in over seven years since the first HCC was opened; with 1 in 4 children and 1 in 5 adults living each day without eating three meals. The Harvest Compassion Centers aims to eliminate hunger in our state, including the 26% of Arizona's children who are hungry. We opened HCC Maryvale this past year because this community is the second most underserved zip code in Arizona where 48% of its' residents who have children live in poverty. Maryvale is a highly undesired community where crime rates are almost triple compared to state averages, where only 55.2% of kids graduate high school as well as, 6.6% have completed a bachelor's degree. The income per capita is 58% lower than the national average, there is an unemployment rate that is 26% higher than our national average. If there ever was a population that could be seen as 'outcasts and the forgotten' Maryvale qualifies and an HCC is needed. Harvest Compassion Center Phoenix located in zip code 85032 is the top underserved zip code in Arizona. With the misconceptions that "no one is hungry near Scottsdale, North Phoenix, Fountain Hills," the HCC proves daily that no matter where you live, what color your skin, or what your religion is hunger knows no limits! The HCC Phoenix on average serves over 550 families a month and never has a slow day. Two other important outreaches the HCC's conduct is an annual Christmas Toy and School Supply give-aways. Twice a year in December and July the HCC focuses on giving away brand new Christmas toys and kids backpacks and school supplies free of charge in addition to their daily outreach. Overall, the HCC's aim to feed anyone in the state of Arizona who is hungry. The HCC proudly serves the homeless, low-income families, active military, veterans, abuse victims living in safe houses/shelters, people of faith, LGBT community, immigrants, elderly, those living in sober living homes, college students, all races/ethnicities including some who live on the reservations, and lastly, refugees. These demographics include children 0-18 years of age. The estimated number of people fed with this grant is approximately 9,000 (includes children). Partners in the program, and other entities providing funding and support (please indicate whether the organization will be submitting applications to any other tribes): Major partners of Harvest Compassion Centers are St. Mary's Food Bank, Midwest Food Bank, and Dessert Mission Food Bank, these larger food banks are HCC partners who can access discounted food which in turn HCC's purchase and deliver to the communities. Just Rite Acoustics, Inc., Rulon International, Mission Increase Foundation, Ghaster Coating & Painting, Arizona Coyotes, Dalton & Elaine Knauss Foundation, Season For Sharing, Giving Hope Worldwide, Inc., Café Valley are just a few HCC partners who have provided funding in the past 12 months for Harvest Compassion Centers. The HCC's will not be submitting an application for any other tribes. Timetable for implementation of the project: Immediately, the HCC's have been open since 2011 and have a mission to plant 5 more HCC's in the state of Arizona in the next 10 years. MSC, Inc. has never accepted government funding for Harvest Compassion Center's feeding programs. MSC, Inc. continues to raise funding annually to operate the Harvest Compassion Center's community outreach programs. By self-funding Harvest Compassion Center's never refuse service to anyone living in Arizona. This standard will not change. Harvest Compassion Center's budget has grown every year as the program has fed more individuals. Unfortunately, the need is greater than expected and annually HCC Phoenix and HCC Maryvale spend $200,000 on food, hygiene, and baby product which is given away free of charge to guests. Harvest Compassion Center's have seen a 10% increase in number of individuals fed since 2016 (with over 6,000 families fed each year) and anticipate $100,000 will be needed annually for each center to ensure proper food, hygiene and baby product is available. HCC Chandler (a sister location) self-funds and operates their location and is not funded by MSC, Inc. With a 5-year goal to open two more Harvest Compassion Center locations this annual food/product cost will only increase.
