The Valley of the Sun YMCA (VOS YMCA) is requesting a $20,000 Arizona Benefits Fund Grant from the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation to support its YMCA Leadership Academy. The YMCA Leadership Academy is a hands-on, interactive program that prepares college seniors for a career in the non-profit sector. As one of the oldest, largest, and most diverse non-profits in Arizona, the Valley of the Sun YMCA (VOS YMCA) provides an optimal learning environment for aspiring non-profit professionals, exposing them to a wide range of programs that serve our community’s full demographic spectrum. As a large non-profit, VOS YMCA has the unique ability to expose participants to all aspects of successful non-profit management—operations, financial development, finance, marketing, public relations, human resources, information technology, board development, and executive leadership. The program runs for sixteen weeks and includes both classroom instruction and hands-on experience. Each week, participants learn a different aspect of non-profit management from experts in the field—Y executive staff as well as other local non-profit leaders, educators, business owners, and key community stakeholders. Topics include volunteer development, fundraising, leadership, community partnerships, program development, risk management, youth development, healthy living, social responsibility, and more. Participants then have the opportunity to put those lessons into practice. They are assigned monthly, hands-on tasks and are matched with a mentor, who provides individualized feedback and support. A monthly calendar with numerous opportunities to participate in all levels and types of non-profit operation (e.g. fundraising events, program and operations cabinet meetings, board meetings, program delivery, executive staff meetings) is presented. Participants choose activities according to areas of interest and professional development needs. The program also includes a one-night retreat at our Sky-Y Camp in Prescott. Here, participants hone their leadership and team development skills and then learn how to teach these skills to others. All program graduates earn a stipend upon completion, and a minimum of sixteen will be hired as full-time staff at Y’s across the Valley. The first session of YMCA Leadership Academy began in January of 2018, and we will graduate the first class in May of 2018. Purpose and how it meets one or more of Fort McDowell’s funding priorities. The overarching goal of the YMCA Leadership Academy is to develop innovative leaders who have the practical skills needed to tackle our County’s most pressing social needs—the rising rate of type two diabetes and other lifestyle-related disease, the growing numbers of young adults who are “disconnected” from school or work, and the lack of social connectedness in our increasingly technology-based world. The well-being of our rapidly growing and diversifying County depends on the development of these new “social entrepreneurs,” the future leaders of our County’s non-profits and social enterprises. Our YMCA Leadership Academy fills Fort McDowell’s priority funding areas of education, health, and economic and community development. In the area of education, our program partners with local colleges and universities to enhance students’ learning experience by providing real-life opportunities to apply skills learned in the classroom. In the area of VALLEY OF THE SUN YMCA 350 N 1st Avenue Phoenix, AZ 85003 P 602-257-5120 F 602-257-5136 www.valleyYMCA.org health, our program participants are introduced to a wide range of wellness programs, which provide another opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a real-life, community-based setting. In the area of economic and community development, our program promotes job readiness by introducing students to opportunities available in the non-profit sector and helping them develop the skills and experience they need to secure these jobs. Our program also helps Maricopa County build a more skilled workforce, boosting the overall well-being of our local economy. Moreover, our graduates gain the skills necessary to create and run innovative programs and help our most vulnerable residents secure healthy and financially secure futures. The need that the program aims to fulfill, the population targeted, and the estimated number of people who will be served. As we move deeper into the 21st century, we continue to rely on non-profit organizations to tackle our County’s growing social needs. To that end, our non-profits need strong, cause-driven leaders to be successful. Although we have a robust university system, there is currently no program to help graduates develop the specific, practical skills they need to become the social innovators of tomorrow. Without such a program, many talented young adults miss the opportunity to follow their passions, and our non-profits miss the opportunity to develop the talent they need to create lasting, positive change. Each year, our YMCA Leadership Academy will address this opportunity by recruiting and training twenty to twenty-five of our most-promising and passionate college seniors to become tomorrow’s non-profit leaders. We reach out to students of all backgrounds to ensure our participants reflect the demographic make-up of the County. Candidates must demonstrate a strong passion for a career that will create lasting, positive social change in our local community. Current non-profit entry-level employees, members, and volunteers who have a passion for a career in the non-profit sector and leadership potential are also considered as candidates. Partners in the program, and other entities providing funding and support. We work with local colleges and universities to recruit students who have a passion for becoming change agents in their community. Current participants come from Arizona State University, and we are in process of reaching out to students from other colleges and universities. Guest speakers from other non-profits, educational institutions, and businesses are utilized to provide deeper insight into volunteerism, risk management, community partnerships, health and wellness programming, and other topics. Current guest speakers include individuals from the Phoenix Suns (community partnerships), Redwoods (risk management), and Arizona State University (health and wellness programming). We will continue to expand our roster of partners as the program develops. Due to the high value this project brings to the community, VOS YMCA is highly committed to its continuation. The program has a total annual budget of $487,500. A 2018 Arizona Benefits Fund Grant request of $300,000 ($100,000 per year for three years) has been submitted to the Gila River Tribe, and VOS YMCA is committed to raising the remaining funds through grant development and contributions to our Annual Support Campaign. To sustain the program in the long-term, VOS YMCA will use a combination of earned and VALLEY OF THE SUN YMCA 350 N 1st Avenue Phoenix, AZ 85003 P 602-257-5120 F 602-257-5136 www.valleyYMCA.org contributed income. This new income will be generated, in part, by YMCA Leadership Academy graduates hired by VOS YMCA, who will be charged with creating revenue generating programs and fundraising. Timetable for implementation of the program. Sessions of our YMCA Leadership Academy will be run annually from January to May, with each session serving approximately twenty to twenty-five college seniors.
