January 30, 2018 (Revised) Supporting information for agenda C-50-18-043-V-00 The Sheriff’s Office is requesting three (3) additions to Fleet. Each of these items replaces current one- time additions to fleet used in everyday operations. 1) One Cargo Van for Central Mail Room (5132): The current vehicle (31038) has been redlined and deemed too costly to repair. It was a one-time addition to Fleet in 2015 after Juvenile had used it 15 years (acquired in August 2000). This vehicle is used for mail pick-ups and deliveries and must be reliable. Space is required for 15 – 20 standard US Post Office Mail bins per trip. The estimated cost is $27,048. 2) One single axle 18’ trailer for LBJ facility (5131). The current 1992 trailer (#271) needs replacement because it would cost more to repair it than to buy a new one. There are numerous safety issues that include: worn out tires, inoperable brakes, missing battery wiring missing and rotting deck boards. This vehicle is used to transport large amounts of equipment and supplies, including mattresses for the LBJ Division. The estimated replacement cost is $6,000. These two vehicles will be purchased initially with Sheriff’s Office FY 2018 Detention (255) operating funds (1000) using savings from closing the Tent Operations. Both these vehicles are necessary for continuing operations and the Sheriff’s Office is also requesting that they be added to the County’s vehicle replacement list for detention vehicles. 3) One 4 x 4 ¾ Ton Expedition EL to replace the current 2006 vehicle with over 100,000 miles (Vehicle 31687) that is used by the MASH Group (5053). This vehicle was originally donated by the MASH Posse and is now has over 100,000 miles. This vehicle is a multi-purpose vehicle used for hauling large and small animal trailers, seized animals, and animal supplies; transportation of animals to and from care facilities and transportation to the jails for training classes. This vehicle will be purchased initially with Sheriff’s Office Donations Funds (203) designated for MASH. Unfortunately, criminal animal abuse continues to occur in Maricopa County. The Sheriff’s Office has been handling criminal animal abuse cases for many years and will continue to do so. Donations are not solicited or planned so it is impractical to rely on them to fund large items. For this reason, the Sheriff’s Office is requesting that this vehicle be added to the County’s vehicle replacement list for General Fund vehicles since a portion of the activity—picking up animals in far reaches of the County from criminal animal abuse sites – is Enforcement Support. Continuing operating expenses will be from the current source, which is the Custody Support Division in the General Fund.
