ARIZONA STATE BOARD ON GEOGRAPHIC AND HISTORIC NAMES State Capitol Chair: Dennis Preisler 1938 Addition, Suite 200 Phone: 602 926 3720 1700 W. Washington Fax: (602) 256-7982 Phoenix, Arizona 85007 Email: aznames@azlibrary.gov Internet: http://www.azlibrary.gov/about/boards-and-commissions/asbghn October 5, 2017 Fran McCarron, Clerk Maricopa County Board of Supervisors 301 W. Jefferson St. Phoenix, AZ 85003 Regarding: Proposal to name segments of the U.S. 60 Governor Rose Mofford Memorial Highway Dear Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, The Arizona State Board on Geographic and Historic Names (Board) has the statutory responsibility for determining the most appropriate names for places in the State of Arizona. To assist the Board in reaching an informed decision, the purpose of this letter is to respectfully request a written recommendation of support or opposition to a name proposal under consideration by the Board. The name Governor Rose Mofford Memorial Highway has been submitted by Roberto A. Reveles of Gold Canyon, Arizona to name segments of the U.S. 60 in Arizona. Note that a segment of the U.S. 60 is designated as the Gila-Pinal Scenic Road, from Mile Post 214.5 east of Florence Junction, to Mile Post 240.5. The Board is statutorily prohibited from naming/renaming roads that are designated as Scenic or Historic. The proposed name would designate the following segments of the U.S. 60 in Arizona: Mile Post 31 to Mile Post 214.5, Quartzsite to east of Florence Junction Mile Post 240.5 to Mile Post 401, west of Miami to the New Mexico border near Springerville Mr. Reyeles stated that he does not wish to conflict with any existing highway or freeway designations in use by ADOT, so the Board may move to vote on shorter segments of U.S. 60 to avoid any conflict that may arise. Please consider this proposal, and circulate to those departments that you feel could provide guidance and direction to the Board on this issue. If you receive other correspondence that would assist the decision-making process, the Board would appreciate receiving a copy for our files. The Board considers information provided by the proponent, opponents, and the Board's staff in its deliberations on proposed names The Board's staff contacts governmental agencies, land owners, interested individuals, and the affected counties, and also conducts independent research for background on the historical and current local usage of the existing and proposed name. The Board would appreciate a response before its next Board meeting scheduled for mid- November, 2017. If the Board does not receive a response, it will assume no opinion, and will proceed as scheduled. In the event that you have questions or will require more time to adequately respond to this request, please contact me at (602) 926-3367 or aznames@azlibrary.gov .
