Maricopa County Air Quality Department Phone: 602.506.6010 Email: AQmail@mail.maricopa.gov Maricopa.gov/AQ CleanAirMakeMore.com Air Quality Educational Kiosks Summary September 2017 Purpose The purpose of the Maricopa County Air Quality Department (MCAQD) Clean Air Kiosk project is to provide an engaging, interactive Clean Air Make More educational kiosk for portable and fixed installations across Maricopa County. MCAQD is looking to partner with the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation and the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department to install one of the fixed kiosks at the South Mountain Environmental Education Center location. The agreement for the fixed installation locations will be for two years, at the conclusion of which continued placement may be re-evaluated and extended based on mutual agreement. Air Monitoring Device The project involves installing a small air monitoring device on the outside of the building where the kiosk would be located. The air monitor is solar-powered. The monitor will collect continuous real-time air quality data which will be displayed on the kiosk using a series of screens that educate the user about the exact air quality where they are located and compared to other location(s). Visual Display The kiosk will include a touch monitor or other touch tablet housed in a cloud-shaped structure. The user will be able to interact with the display by rotating through various screens. The kiosk can be fabricated in a wall-mount version or a podium (as seen in the graphic). The kiosk will be able to be raised or lowered depending on the height of the user. Content The user will experience the following screens: • Current Air Quality – This data display is powered by the air monitoring device. • Winter Pollution Time-Lapse – This is a user-controlled, interactive tool showing airborne pollution over a several hour period. • Causes & Effects of Pollution – This interactive infographic will be designed to teach users about how their actions can impact air pollution. By dragging slide bars, a user can change data points to see realistic, real-time effects. • What Can I Do? – Using our summer ozone campaign characters, this section will teach users about seven daily personal actions that can be taken to positively affect air quality. Users will have the ability to switch the language at any point throughout the experience. The kiosk will always revert to the primary language desired once the user’s session has ended. • Cost – There will be no costs incurred by the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation or the City of Phoenix associated with the kiosk. Installation at the South Mountain Environmental Education Center • The kiosk at the South Mountain Environmental Education Center will be wall-mounted on the east wall of the entrance. The initial planning team has selected a 32 inch monitor for the display facing. MCAQD will work closely with the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation to plan and pay for the installation of an outlet to power the kiosk. • The air monitoring device will be situated just outside of the south buidling near the existing electrical boxes. There will be no need to affix any of the device components to the ground (therefore, no blue staking or digging in the surface will be required). Air Quality Educational Kiosks Summary Page 2 of 2
