1. Briefly describe the organization’s mission, history and goals
The mission of American Indian College (AIC) is to equip students to impact communities and
society in general through their career aspirations and through their Christian faith. AIC was
founded in 1957 by missionary Alta Washburn as a ministry training school to prepare young
people to serve their communities in their chosen fields. Over the years the College added
additional programs beyond ministry training, including degrees in Business and Elementary
Education. AIC has become an extension site of Southwestern Assemblies of God University
(SAGU). With respect to outcomes AIC has a record of performance that outpaces all other
colleges serving Native American students.
For example,
• AIC has consistently ranked at the top in both retention and graduation rates for all schools
across the United States serving Native American students. None of the other such
schools are private, but rely heavily on the federal government for operational support.
• Graduates of AIC’s elementary education program have the highest state certification
pass rate (93%) for all colleges serving at risk students that offer elementary education
degrees.
• Over 60 AIC graduates are currently serving as elementary school teachers and several
are school administrators, including Dr. Debi Tom who serves as supervisor of elementary
schools for a large school district in New Mexico.
AIC has a rich tradition of educating students who are equipped to revitalize their communities
economically, socially, and spiritually and AIC’s goals are to continue and improve on this
tradition.
Describe the goals and activities of the proposed project.
It is our goal to increase the retention of our students through to graduation. Even though we are
at the top in terms of graduation rate for all schools serving primarily Native American students
we believe we can do even better. Moving forward as an extension site of SAGU we see the
need to provide up to date technology. This project will enable us to address many of our unmet
technology needs as outlined in the attached budget.
2. Describe how the proposed project satisfies one or more of the priority funding areas
identified by the Fort Mc Dowell Yavapai Nation.
This project matches one of the programs/projects listed under Education. In today’s world
technology is a large part of a student’s career success. It is our desire to give our students the
skills they need to be the best contributing member of their community they can be .
3. Identify the needs/problems to be addressed, target population and number of people
to be served by the project.

SAGU/American Indian College is in need of an overall technology upgrade. Upgrades will benefit
students, faculty and staff as well as improve services in the library and computer lab. The chapel
needs to have improved equipment and upgraded presentation. Classrooms will receive much
needed equipment to enable the professors to present classes in the most technologically current
way. All of these improvements are listed in detail in the attached budget.
This project will serve 100+ students that attend SAGU/American Indian College. The college is
very diverse in terms of ethnicities although the majority of the students are Native American.
Other ethnicities represented are Hispanic, African American, White and Marshallese.
4. Define the project as a new or continuing program.
This is a new project. It will bolster our school wide technology and significantly increase our
ability to serve our students adequately with the most current technology. We have had
technology available to our students in the past. However, it is not the most current and is not
adequate to prepare them for the 21st century working environment.
5. Provide a brief timeline including start and finish dates. Indicate if the timeline is
flexible.
We are projecting this project to begin in the Fall 2017 semester
Identify other organization, partners or funders participating in the project and their roles.
There are no other organizations or partners for this project per se. The College is supported
monthly by individuals, churches and businesses. Their support is critical for our operating
expenses, and though it is growing modestly it is not sufficient to accomplish our goal of providing
the best technology available.
6. Identify other organization, partners or funders participating in the project and their
roles.
There are no other organizations currently participating in this project.
7. Indicate any application to and/or awards made by a tribe other than the Gila River
Indian Community for state shared revenues for this and any other project.
No other funding is being received at this time through the state shared revenues for this or any
other project. However, we are applying to the Gila River Nation for revenue sharing funds to
establish a Learning Center to assist at risk students in their first 2 semesters of college.
