Narrative:
Proposed Project/Purpose
The project we propose to the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation – American Red Cross Humanitarian
Outreach – requests funding to purchase up to three new vehicles for our mission-critical fleet: a Ford
Escape and a Ford Fusion to be used principally for Disaster Cycle Services and Service to the Armed
Forces, and a Dodge ProMaster 3500 to support the AZ Blood Region. This is a “new” project in the
sense that the vehicles would be new, however they will be used in connection with on-going programs
which are deeply embedded in fulfilling our mission in Arizona, ensuring that the Red Cross is ready to
respond at a moment’s notice while decreasing our operating costs through better gas mileage and
reduced maintenance. With your permission, we would be proud to display the Seal of the Fort McDowell
Yavapai Nation on these vehicles, serving as a visible reminder of your commitment to the Red Cross and
to Arizona as your vehicles travel throughout our state each day, helping people when they need it most.
Since 1916, the Red Cross has delivered help and hope in AZ. We provide relief – shelter, food, supplies
and more – to families who have lost everything to disasters. We collect, test and safely deliver lifesaving
blood to accident victims, mothers giving birth, and patients battling cancer. Red Cross training offers the
skills and confidence needed to save lives in an emergency, and we support members of the military,
veterans and their families throughout their service and beyond.
We are keeping our promise to alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies throughout Arizona.
Over the past fiscal year, we fulfilled this mission in Arizona by:
 Responding to 742 local disaster incidents, mostly home fires.
 Collecting/distributing donations from over 34,000 blood/platelet donors, conducting about 2000
mobile drives, operating 24/7.
 Empowering 38,701 people with lifesaving skills - first aid, CPR/AED, water safety and babysitter’s
training, a figure which grows to 3,013,798 when we include those who have downloaded our Red
Cross apps and accessed various components of the electronic and “Digital Reach” aspects of our
Health and Safety information/training.
 Assisting more than 16,600 military members, military family members, and veterans.
Seen through the lens of the priority areas identified by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, American
Red Cross humanitarian services, with their emphasis on saving lives, relate most directly to health and
public safety, with secondary linkages to education through our preparedness programming. In the event
of a local disaster, most often a home fire, first responders and local law enforcement know that the Red
Cross will respond promptly and reliably, providing those immediate emergency services which are vital
components of the health and safety of the victims and the community at large. In the case of a larger
response where a respite center or shelter is opened, the critical role of health care services and public
safety is magnified, as the Red Cross works with local governments, emergency management agencies
and community organizations to coordinate the immediate sheltering and feeding of affected populations,

providing a safe and secure environment for disaster victims. The Red Cross relies on its fleet to deliver
our humanitarian and blood services. These vehicles transport volunteers, shelter supplies, food and other
relief items to disaster sites. They are vital to shepherding blood on its complex journey from donor to
patient - from collection site to testing site to hospital. They are instrumental in delivering the proper
supplies, such as large manikins and books, to our health/safety trainings, and our vehicles deliver
comfort and care items to service members and their families. Our fleet is on the road every day,
providing a constant community presence and helping deliver our lifesaving programs/services.
Community Need:
Fundamentally, every Red Cross program/service in Arizona relies on our vehicles. Without them, our
humanitarian/blood services would be seriously hampered. In the wake of Arizona disasters, we deliver
food, shelter, and care during people’s times of greatest need. We transport volunteers where/when they
are needed, helping families whose homes have been ravaged by fires, gathering detailed information
about devastated communities. Our Blood Services vehicles transport necessary equipment – beds,
analysis machines, etc.; move blood from collection point to testing facilities; distribute blood and blood
products to hospitals and cancer treatment centers. Using Red Cross vehicles, we let service members
know where they can access critical emergency communication and financial services, and we transport
staff, volunteers, equipment and materials to VA health facilities, yellow ribbon events, and reintegration
and deployment briefings. Throughout Arizona, the Red Cross fleet is a highly respected and trusted sign
of hope.
Target Population:
American Red Cross services are available without discrimination of any kind to everyone in Arizona – a
population of 6.4 million, which grows significantly when including the visitors to our state. We are
typically interacting with our clients in their most vulnerable moments – providing assistance
immediately following disasters; supplying lifesaving blood and blood products, fulfilling rare blood and
emergency requests when blood is needed in two hours or less; offering critical services with a caring
touch to our military members, facilitating a service member’s return home for a last visit with a critically
ill family member; empowering individuals, families and organizations with lifesaving skills and
emergency preparedness information. Our pledge to Arizonans: no matter who you are, where you are
located, no matter how inaccessible you may be, when the Red Cross is notified of a natural or human-
caused disaster, the Red Cross responds, 100% of the time.
Timetable and Funders:
The timetable for this grant application is for the upcoming fiscal year, namely July 1, 2017 through June
30, 2018. Red Cross fleet vehicles travel an average 18,000 miles/year and are on the road for up to 8-10
years.
We have applied for funding from the Gila River Indian Community and anticipate applying to the Salt
River Pima Indian Community.
