The Cancer Support Community Arizona is the only comprehensive program in Arizona providing emotional support and services to people, of any age, diagnosed with cancer. Annually, Cancer Support Community Arizona serves 2,000 adults, teens and children through programs provided free of cost, in a home-like setting where all whose lives are touched by cancer can be surrounded by an atmosphere of healing and support. Every day, Cancer Support Community Arizona provides professionally led support groups, educational workshops, and mind/body programs so that people affected by cancer can learn vital skills to regain control, reduces feelings of isolation and restore hope. The proposed project, Grow 360° to Recovery, will create an edible garden space at the Cancer Support Community campus at 360 East Palm Lane, Phoenix, AZ. The garden will provide cancer support patients, survivors and their families with edible organic fruits and vegetables. The garden is essential to a holistic approach towards healing; as plants, have been proven to provide phytonutrients and phytochemicals which can help fight cancer and rebuild a healthy immune system. Nutrition education and healthy cooking classes complement the project and afford the opportunity for participants to use the foods produced in the garden while they also learn how to create a garden in their own home space. The project will include designing the garden, training staff on maintaining the garden, planting, harvesting, nutritional classes and on-going healthy lifestyle education. The purpose of the program and how it meets one or more of Fort McDowell’s Funding priorities Grow 360° to Recovery, provides individuals diagnosed and survivors of cancer with the opportunity for education regarding the benefits of plant based eating while also learning how to grow their own garden. A recent study showed that cancer survivors report improvements in strength, agility and endurance because of gardening and say it helps to reduce the mental breakdown from worries related to a cancer diagnosis, Ideally, family members and loved ones will also participate in the Grow 360° to Recovery project so that gardens can be replicated at home, even in small spaces. The Grow 360° to Recovery project aligns with the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation’s focus on health and education. At Cancer Support Community Arizona, we believe that no one should face cancer alone. Through free programs, offered year-round we provide educational workshops and lectures designed to help individuals understand and manager cancer and its treatment and through our healthy lifestyles programs we help individuals through their cancer journey through mind- body stress reduction, exercise, nutrition and health maintenance. 360 East Palm Lane ▪ Phoenix, AZ 85004 ▪ (602) 712-1006 ▪ (602) 712-1009 fax www.cscaz.org So that no one faces cancer alone® The need that the program aims to fulfill, the target population, and the estimated number of people who will be served by the grant. The target population are individuals who are diagnosed or surviving cancer. At Cancer Support Community Arizona, we know there is a great need to provide nutritional information as there is strong evidence that a plant-based diet cuts the risk of cancer recurrence. Our annual participant survey continues to show an increased need for information related to cancer nutrition. Both the illness and the treatment can affect appetite and maintaining strength and weight is important for coping with side effects of treatment. Nutrition during cancer care is important to help patients get the nutrients they need to prevent body tissue from breaking down, rebuild tissue and fight infection. People who eat well during cancer treatment may even be able to handle higher doses of cancer treatments. An on-site garden provides better tasting organic fruits, vegetables and herbs and helps our participants to reduce their costs of having to purchase these items in the store. 480 people will be served under the Grow 360° to Recovery project funded by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation as the new gardens will provide enough healthy fresh food for 40 people every month.
