Kiwanis Club of New River (a non-profit 501c(3)) organization that partners with Maricopa County to provide government services for the benefit of the public. The Club has an agreement to manage the county park in New River (New River Kiwanis Community Park) since 1984. The Club provides this management with volunteers and no county funding. Park physical address: 48606 N 17th Ave., New River AZ 85087. Park mailing address: New River Kiwanis Community Park, PO Box 75204, New River, Arizona 85087. Park Phone Number: (623) 465-0229. Primary Contact: Contact: Ed Taylor, Park & Arena Superintendent, Phone: (602) 739-1235 Address: 43220 N 22nd St, New River, AZ 85087 Email: etaylor@estentinc.com Narrative: 1) Proposed project: County Park Improvement for Community Education, Health, and Wellness. - We are requesting thirty thousand dollars ($30,000.00) for this new project to provide a shade structure for our outdoor playground area and to upgrade the current equipment. This project is central to our continuous improvement program that ensures the park is user-friendly and expands the capacity to offer more wellness opportunities to the community. The playground equipment currently has no shade and is therefore too hot for the children to use during the day; which is when they would be using it. A shade structure would block much of the sun's harmful UV rays and keep playground temperatures at a tolerable level. Furthermore, having a shade structure will mitigate the UV damage to the equipment and therefore increase the longevity of the playground equipment. The current equipment is weathered and aging (10 to 20 years old). Additionally, some of the safety requirements have been updated (such as the new definition of “strangle” holds that will require the swings to be refashioned). With the responsibility for keeping the park facilities of in the best condition for visitor use, the Club needs to provide some overdue upgrades, maintenance, and replacement for its current equipment, which has deteriorated due to age and use. 2) Purpose of the program or project and how it meets one or more of Fort McDowell’s funding priorities The entire project aims to address Fort McDowell’s Funding health, public safety, and environment priorities. Upon completion of this project, our youth will have a more user friendly and safe playground. They will be able to participate in recreational activities while gaining an appreciation for the rural setting of the Park. Outdoor play is essential to the development of all children and the continued well-being of all ages. Playing outdoors addresses obesity issues and builds social skills. Having the shade structure for key exercise equipment (fort, spring riders, slides, and swings) in our Children’s Playground area will ensure the area is useable year-around. Having this project done, we can increase recreational and wellness activities for our community. The shade structure over the playground equipment will offer a safer and cooler area for the youngest children to play in while their older siblings play ball or other organized sporting events (T-Ball, Little League, Soccer, track and field, etc.). With improved equipment, we can promote the play area as a safe place for families to connect during weekends, holidays, and community events. It will provide activities and network opportunities for physically and mentally challenged children and adults in our communities so that they will be able to participate and contribute to the community. 3) Need that the program or project aims to fulfill, the population targeted, and the estimated number of people who will be served by the grant The New River area needs a place where children can play safely. Play is the key to physical, mental, intellectual, and social well being of children. It impacts hugely on almost every developmental aspect of children’s lives holistically and with multifaceted ways. Our New River Kiwanis Park is in a residential rural setting with no other public parks, downtown area, civic auditorium, or community centers within 20 miles (excluding Anthem Community which is closed to non-Anthem residents). About 30,000 residents live in the unincorporated Maricopa County area of New River and Desert Hills; they live within an eight (8) mile radius of the park and about 25% of this population is under the age of 18 years old. We have many potential users. Families with toddlers and school age children have no other public park in the New River - Desert Hills area. Youth groups (Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Cub Scouts, church groups, etc) use our park for camp outs. With shade and safe equipment, they could use the play area more during their education and campouts events. 4) Partners in the program or project, and other entities providing funding and support No addition funding will be needed but several other groups will be providing in-kind assistance. • Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department- advisory and oversights • New River - Desert Hills Community Association – volunteers committed to provide 50 hours but may offer more as needed for installation • Foothills Focus – local newspaper publicity to recruit volunteers and park users • Teen Challenge – volunteers as needed • Boy Scouts and Club Scouts – volunteers and possible Eagle Scout project to enhance the park. • Jake Rice Foundation – provides funds from their annual rodeo event held at the park. We do not plan on submitting any other applications to any other tribes for this and any other projects.
