Provide the narrative in paragraph form in the text field provided. Please be thorough but strive for brevity. 1. Briefly describe the organization’s history, mission and goals. 1. Briefly describe the organization’s mission, history and goals The mission of American Indian College (AIC) is to equip students to impact communities and society in general through their career aspirations and through their Christian faith. AIC was founded in 1957 by missionary Alta Washburn as a ministry training school to prepare young people to serve their communities in their chosen fields. Over the years the College added additional programs beyond ministry training, including degrees in Business and Elementary Education. AIC has become an extension site of Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU). With respect to outcomes AIC has a record of performance that outpaces all other colleges serving Native American students. For example, • AIC has consistently ranked at the top in both retention and graduation rates for all schools across the United States serving Native American students. None of the other such schools are private, but rely heavily on the federal government for operational support. • Graduates of AIC’s elementary education program have the highest state certification pass rate (93%) for all colleges serving at risk students that offer elementary education degrees. • Over 60 AIC graduates are currently serving as elementary school teachers and several are school administrators, including Dr. Debi Tom who serves as supervisor of elementary schools for a large school district in New Mexico. AIC has a rich tradition of educating students who are equipped to revitalize their communities economically, socially, and spiritually and AIC’s goals are to continue and improve on this tradition. 2. If the applying organization is non-municipal or a non-profit 501c, please describe your relationship with Arizona municipalities including past and present support, whether it be through partnerships, collaborations, in-kind contributions, grants, tax-based funding or other. Describe the supporting municipality’s role in this project. If the applying organization is a municipality governmental sub- division please enter the text “Not applicable.” Not Applicable 3. Describe the proposed project and planned goals and activities. It is our goal to increase the retention of our students through to graduation. Even though we are at the top in terms of graduation rate for all schools serving primarily Native American students we believe we can do even better. Moving forward as an extension site of SAGU we see the need to provide a Learning Center to increase our students’ academic success which will enable more students to remain in school and graduate. Gila River Indian Community Grant Application Grant Cycle 2017 4. Describe how the proposed project satisfies one or more of the priority funding areas identified by the Gila River Indian Community. This project matches one of the programs/projects listed under Education. These funding areas are tutoring and hands-on Providing the Learning Center will enhance the general knowledge of participants and promote life- long learning. The Learning Center will also provide Academic Accountability for each student. 5. Identify the needs/problems to be addressed, target population and number of people to be served by the project. The problems being addressed are the need for tutoring and hands-on learning. Many of our students come to us at risk academically. With tutoring available these students are able to overcome their academic deficiencies and obtain at minimum an Associate’s Degree. Many of them go on to earn Bachelor’s Degrees and several go on to graduate school and obtain higher degrees. The need for a fulltime staff person to administer this program is critical. There is also the need for support personnel to assist with the program. We currently have two computer labs for student use. 6. Define the project as a new or continuing program. This project would bolster programs already in place and significantly increase our ability to serve our students adequately. There have been tutors available on a limited basis as volunteers in the past, but we are seeing the need for a fulltime staff person and support personnel for the Learning Center. 7. Provide a brief timeline including start and finish dates. Indicate if the timeline is flexible. We are projecting this project to begin in the Fall 2017 semester and conclude in the Fall 2022. This timeline could be flexible if necessary. Year 1 would have the greatest immediate impact as it would allow us to begin offering the Learning Center. 8. Identify other organizations, partners or funders participating in the project and their roles. There are no other organizations or partners for this project per se. The College is supported monthly by individuals, churches and businesses. Their support is critical for our operating expenses, and though it is growing modestly it is not sufficient to accomplish our goal of graduating our student’s debt free at this time. Overall, student generated income (tuition/fees and room and board) represents only about half of our total revenue while the rest is provided by donors and contributed services. We receive no government funds for operational purposes. 9. Would you be able to implement the proposed plan if your organization received partial funding for this project? Gila River Indian Community Grant Application Grant Cycle 2017 With partial funding we could accomplish the project to a lesser degree than with full funding. Whatever amount of funding received will be used to partially complete the proposed project and we will have to redefine our priorities. 10. Describe your plan for project sustainability beyond the grant period. If this is a program/project previously funded by the Gila River Indian Community describe efforts made towards the previously described sustainability plan. The budget being submitted with this request will show a diminishing budget over the 5-year period. The largest amount requested will be in year 1 and reduced each year until the end of the 5 years. In year 4 we envision that the project will become sustained and fully funded by the College. 11. Describe your plan to document progress and results. Progress and results will be documented by monitoring the retention rate, graduation rate and the pass/fail rate of our students. 12. Indicate any application to and/or awards made by a tribe other than the Gila River Indian Community for state shared revenues for this and any other project for the past five (5) years. If this information is included in a separate attachment, please indicate that here. No other funding is being received at this time through the state shared revenues for this or any other project. However, we are applying to the Ft. McDowell Yavapai Nation for revenue sharing funds to apply toward revamping our technology structure here at American Indian College. That request in no way duplicates anything being requested in this application. We are also requesting funds for specific projects outside of the Revenue Sharing Program.
