Narrative
Please structure your proposal to provide the following information in the order indicated. Provide the narrative
in paragraph form in the text field provided. Please be thorough but strive for brevity.
1. Briefly describe the organization’s history, mission and goals.
Help In Healing Home (HIHH) is a not-for-profit healthcare hospitality “home away-from
home” for patients and their caregivers experiencing life-changing illness and urgent transplant
and are required by doctors to stay close to their treatment facilities at the Mayo Clinic hospital
in Phoenix.
Help In Healing Home (HIHH) is designed for those requiring a prolonged recovery, where
the risk of infection is minimized, in a supportive environment that keeps them close to their
medical professionals. Our mission: For patients and their caregivers who seek to enhance the
healing process in a secure, warm, and compassionate environment, Help In Healing Home is
the independent, non-profit, donor sustained, home away-from home that supports and
strengthens their journey to recovery.
Our mission of service started in 1999 as The Arizona Transplant House. This home had
previously been an Arabian horse ranch belonging to Ed and Ruth Tweed. In the 1990’s their
daughter, Sally Tweed Groom donated the property to Mayo Clinic, and it was transformed into
the Arizona Transplant House.
Recently, responding to innovations in surgeries, clinical trials and medical treatments not
forseen when we were established, the Board of Directors broadened our mission to provide
services to a wider range of patients. Consistent with our new mission our name was changed
to Help In Healing Home.
Today, HIHH is located in the newly constructed Village at Mayo Clinic, adjacent to the Mayo
Clinic hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. The new casita-style facility can now accommodate 48
patients and caregivers.

2. If the applying organization is non-municipal or a non-profit 501c, please describe your relationship with
Arizona municipalities including past and present support, whether it be through partnerships,
collaborations, in-kind contributions, grants, tax-based funding or other. Describe the supporting
municipality’s role in this project. If the applying organization is a municipality governmental sub-
division please enter the text “Not applicable.”
Help In Healing Home has no past or present relationships with any Arizona Municipality.
3. Describe the proposed project and planned goals and activities.
The Help In Healing Home (HIHH) proposed grant project will support the HIHH Charity Care
Fund. The fund provides no-cost lodging for patients and their caregivers who have limited
financial resources.
Last year we had 37 requests from patients and their caregivers who needed financial
assistance to cover the $40 per night fee. We were able to accommodate only 13 of those
requests with “gratis” stays.
HIHH provides quality, conventient amenities and lodging. Additionally we provide the
assistance of a compassionate and caring staff and the companionship of fellow patients and
caregivers who understand what others are going through – all at a donor-sustained, non-profit
rate. In the face of mounting medical costs, this home away-from home is high in demand for
many people who need assistance.
For patients who undergo major surgery such as the removal of a malignant tumor or the
transplant of whole organs or bone marrow, recovery can require seemingly endless blood
draws, biopsies, and consultations, medication adjustments, and more. Many of these people
are left not only physically broken but financially broken as well.
The majority of our patients are here for a whole organ transplant, liver, kidney, heart, lung,
ets. A percentage of our patients stay with us while undergoing treatment for pectus surgeries,
back surgeries, or head trauma.
A grant from the Gila River Indian Community in the amount of $25,000 for our Charity Care
Fund will provide housing for around 17 patients and their caregivers.

Gila River Indian Community Grant Application
Grant Cycle 2017
HIHH currently has 24 rooms that each house a patient and caregiver. The average stay for
a patient and caregiver at HIHH is 38 nights. This means when we have a Charity Care case it
costs $1520 for the average 38 night stay.
HIHH Charity Care Fund expenses include: room fee, utilities, and on-site cleaning staff to
ensure the Village is sanitized to the Mayo Clinic standards for patients, many of whom are
immune suppressed. We also provide all the necessities for our patients and caregivers to stay
with us, including bedding, towels, and a fully equipped kitchen.
4. Describe how the proposed project satisfies one or more of the priority funding areas identified by the
Gila River Indian Community.
The proposed Charity Care Fund would fall in line with the Healthcare priority funding area of
the Gila River Indian Community. We provide housing to a wide variety and scope of patients
and caregivers from Arizona. Around 25 percent of our Arizona patients reside in Pinal County.
HIHH also serves patients from all across the United States and abroad. A Portion of these
people (21%) have limited or no resources. We have in the past had to turn people away
because we had no funding available. As a small non-profit we strive to help as many people as
possible.
5. Identify the needs/problems to be addressed, target population and number of people to be served by
the project.
Help In Healing Home’s common patient profile is a couple who has traveled from
approximately 200 miles on short notice and is unfamiliar with the area. Many times this is their
first experience with a major medical issue. Most of them have been forced to either quit their
job or take an extended unpaid leave of absence. Many people, who arrive at HIHH come with
only a suitcase and their scheduled appointments at the hospital. The length of stay is unknown
and their financial resources are limited.
Here are some of their stories:
-Laura: “My husband, Ivan, suffered from kidney disease and underwent regular dialysis at
home for four years. It was taking over our lives. We live in Las Vegas, Nevada so when a
matching kidney became available for transplant at Mayo Clinic, we stayed at Help In Healing
Home. It was so convenient for getting to appointments at the hospital. The setting is

wonderful with beautiful desert views, but the biggest benefit was the social support from the
other patients and caregivers. You can’t just walk our of your room at a motel to find someone
to talk with who actually was interested in discussing red blood cell counts. Finally, we were no
longer alone in our journey.”
- Brian: “I flew all the way from Austrailia to Phoenix to have surgery. But it wasn’t for
myself; it was for my father who needed a life-saving kidney transplant. The calm and comfort
of the facilities at Help In Healing Home were just what the doctor ordered. The staff provided
the right amount of service for me to feel pampered and independent at the same time. The
other guests had their own stories and experiences, and we shared something life-changing
together – a common bond I will always appreciate.”
- Rudy: “I was almost out of options after years on dialysis. When a kidney became
available I almost didn’t make it in time. There were no flights available from Las Cruces, New
Mexico, and it took a state police escort to get me there. Now, whenever I have to come back
for follow-up appointments, I always call for a place. It feels like home to us. It’s like having a
second family.”
Help In Healing Home is committed to providing as many Charity Care rooms to qualified
patients and caregivers as we can fund. However, in past years we have only been able to
allow a small percentage (30%) of patients and caregivers who request “gratis” stays to actually
use our lodging.
Our proposed program would pay the minimal $40 per night fee for patients and caregivers
who request through their Social Worker as well as our Operations Manager. This small fee
covers our bare-bones cost of 24/7 on-site staff, housekeeping, toiletries and paper supplies
stocked for each room, as well as the linens for the patients and caregivers in each private
room.
6. Define the project as a new or continuing program.
Help In Healing Home Charity Care Fund is a new project. We established the fund to
address the growing number of patients and caregivers in financial need who require lodging.
We expect this need to continue to grow as medical costs rise.
7. Provide a brief timeline including start and finish dates. Indicate if the timeline is flexible.

Gila River Indian Community Grant Application
Grant Cycle 2017
Because Help In Healing Home Charity Care Fund is a new project, we want to begin as
quickly as possible to allow those in need of lodging assistance a place to stay.
One Year Funding planned dates: October 2017 – September 2018
- October 2017: begin project
- Provide HIHH Charity Care to an estimated 17 patients
8. Identify other organizations, partners or funders participating in the project and their roles.
Help In Healing Home is a unique platform for medical lodging. Each year we will raise
additional funds for the Charity Care Fund through a variety of other fundraising activities
including, a solicitation letter to our list of donors and supporters as well as fundraising Gala
events we organize.
9. Would you be able to implement the proposed plan if your organization received partial funding for this
project?
Yes, we would be able to move forward with the Charity Care Fund, however, we would have
to adjust the number of patients we serve based upon the funding received.
10. Describe your plan for project sustainability beyond the grant period. If this is a program/project
previously funded by the Gila River Indian Community describe efforts made towards the previously
described sustainability plan.
Help In Healing Home will continue to provide support for Charity Care cases through private
donations and grant funding, drawing upon a base of community support that provides general
operating funds for HIHH.
11. Describe your plan to document progress and results.
Help In Healing Home will track the number of patients and caregivers who stay with us, as
well as the number we cannot accommodate because of lack of funds. From October 2017 –
September 2018, we anticipate serving over 500 patients and caregivers whithin this one year
time frame, of which approximately 40 will be Charity Care cases.

12. Indicate any application to and/or awards made by a tribe other than the Gila River Indian Community
for state shared revenues for this and any other project for the past five (5) years. If this information is
included in a separate attachment, please indicate that here.
Help In Healing Home does not have any current awards or pending applications form/to any
tribes for the proposed Charity Care Fund project submitted to the Gila River Indian Community.
