to get back to the number of prosecutors we had in 2009.

Employees are our most important asset in delivering just prosecutions and high caliber legal
support.
Compensation increases of 2.5% to 3.5% annually must be included in each budgeting cycle. Historically, these
increases have been an afterthought and meted out only if excess County dollars make it easy to do so.
Building Back Up...
It has taken years to build back up from the stagnancy of the recession and we still aren't there yet. Our
work will be wasted if we can't retain what we've achieved.
We are attracting high caliber attorneys that we need to retain. Even one loss is substantial. It is not only a
loss to the Office and our training and recruiting investment but also a loss to our community.
These same prosecutors have staggering student loans.
While the County offers a generous loan repayment program to prosecutors and defense attorneys, it caps out
at $72,000. Although 42% of our attorneys participate in LRAP, more than 75% of eligible attorneys with less
than five years of service participate and had an average loan balance in excess of $145,000 when admitted to
the program. Many of our career attorneys are starting to reach the program maximum.
Lagging Compensation
Maricopa County has distributed a total of
10% in compensation increases since 2011.
