NIKlison COMMISSIONER OF SI IPERIOR COURT PHOENIX, AZ 85003-2243 OFFICE (602-506-0959) December 8, 2016 Ms. Tera Scherer Arizona Department of Veterans' Services 3839 North 3 rd Street Phoenix, AZ 85012 RE: Veterans' Donation Fund Small Grant Application Dear Ms. Scherer: My name is Wendy Morton. I am the Commissioner for the Veterans Court in Maricopa County Superior Court. Our court in Maricopa County is the fourth largest trial court jurisdiction in the country. Our probation department has approximately 350 veterans on its caseload. Our veterans court is a non-adversarial post-adjudication court that strives to assist veterans who are on felony probation. Each year, we hold approximately 580 hearings, serving 120 veterans. Veterans come to court as their challenges on probation require. Some, who face severe challenges and crisis come to court weekly. Our court team includes the assigned probation officer, public defender and staff from the Veterans Administration who staff the cases with me prior to court in order to create a contract which will assist the veteran to be successful from one court date to the next. Our veteran's court has been in existence for almost 6 years. We are fortunate to have committed and highly trained probation officers who propose and support problem-solving and innovation in order to make our court more successful. A Veterans Court Alumni group is one innovation that will make a huge difference to our veterans. One of the biggest challenges that I see in veteran's court is the need to engage the veterans in their own recovery and success. Most of our veterans are suffering with profound drug addiction. They need both support and accountability. To keep veterans engaged, we work hard to find "a way in"; something that will engage each veteran where he/she will find a meaningful connection with the community and a pro-social outlet that will help to find fulfillment and purpose. To this end, we have created CANVAS (Creating Art, Nurturing Vision, Achieving Success), which is a program to encourage veterans to be creative. This is one recent innovation in our court. Having a Veterans Alumni group will be another. Supporting veterans requires a team that includes others in the community beyond the probation officer. We have - 2 - Peer Support mentors who come to monthly court orientations to tell their stories and assist veterans in the community. Often when a veteran is being successfully released from court after having achieved sobriety and compliance, that veteran will speak to the entire group and share his/her story. I have seen that veterans gain more inspiration from each other than anything the court can offer. The alumni veterans have a unique perspective that only they can share. They have spoken movingly of the challenges that have faced. They have talked about feeling lonely and isolated, overcoming depression, attaining and maintaining sobriety, reconnecting with their families and friends, accepting responsibility and holding themselves accountable. They have spoken about how far they have come and acknowledge how far that they still have to go. They have both offered support and inspiration for others and still need that support themselves. Our alumni build espirit de corps and gain strength from each other. They often come to court to support each other and to celebrate another veteran's success. This is the real mark of success of our court. I consider these veterans to be the real heroes of our court. Keeping in touch with, organizing and allowing these veterans to help other veterans would be a force multiplier that will reap great rewards for new members and alumni alike. An alumni group would allow the veterans to maintain the friendships that they have forged and have the opportunity to stay connected, while giving back to others. Being involved with the court in a different capacity will allow alumni to build their self-esteem. Having additional resources to build this program would allow us to continue to provide pro-social outlets for veterans and create a group of mentors that other members of the court can aspire to join. I believe that a Veterans' Court Alumni group is a critical next-step in the development of our court. I whole-heartedly support this proposal and will do my part to encourage and assist with its development and success. Thank you for considering this proposal. Sincerely, Hon. Wendy S. Morton, Commissioner Superior Court of Arizona in Maricopa County Raymond Perez PO Box 413 Glendale, AZ 85311 December 5, 2016 Ms. Tera Scherer Arizona Department of Veterans' Services 3839 North 3 rd Street Phoenix, AZ 85012 RE: Veterans' Donation Fund Small Grant Application Dear Ms. Scherer, My name is Raymond Perez and about three years ago I was a participant in Veterans Court. It took me some time to recognize and accept the changes that I needed to make in my life and to accept help from the VA. A lot has changed since then. I am now a graduate of Veterans Court and a Peer Support Specialist at the Phoenix VA working with the Veterans Court program. I am pleased to write this letter in support of the proposal for the Veterans Court Alumni Group. In my current position I utilize my personal journey of recovery to assist veterans that are in the Veterans Court program in making positive changes in their lives.1 offer guidance, suggestion, and inspire them with hope that they too can overcome barriers and make positive changes in their lives. Veterans who have successfully completed the Veterans Court program are planning and will carry out Alumni Group activities. Adult Probation officers involved with the Veterans Court are enthusiastic about the Alumni Group and are supportive of these efforts. We are grateful for Adult Probation's attendance at Alumni Group meetings and their help with coordination and oversight for Alumni Group activities. This group will greatly benefit our veteran population by reconnecting them with the morals, values, and leadership qualities that were instilled upon each and every one of us while in service. Graduates of the Veterans Court have typically accomplished significant change in their lives, often involving recovery from substance abuse, traumatic injury, and/or mental health disorders. After graduating from the program, these veterans often want and would benefit from continued support and fellowship with other veterans as well as the opportunity to offer assistance and support to other veterans and their families. Participants in Alumni Group activities will benefit from enjoyable events that support continued well-being of veterans through positive social interactions; good, clean fun; and mutual understanding and support. If you have any questions, please contact me at (480) 253-8549. Sincerely, Raymond Perez
