Project Name: Arizona Diamondbacks Science of Baseball – STEM Education Initiative
Please provide a brief description of the project being submitted to the 12% SRPMIC
Grant program.
Arizona Diamondbacks Science of Baseball is a series of programs and initiatives that
promote the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
The program is offered free of charge to any interested Arizona school and provides a
mechanism for elementary and middle school students to improve their academic
performance. The goal is to translate the American love of baseball into an appreciation,
understanding, and passion of the science and mathematics underlying the sport.
This season-long program aims to engage and empower students with a university
research-based curriculum, designed with College Professor and STEM Expert Ricardo
Valerdi. Each year, more than 6,000 students, 200 teachers at schools across the state will
participate in the program.
The objectives of this program are to promote STEM through classroom theory and
practical applications of the sport of baseball. Through the D-backs Science of Baseball

Program, over 15 lesson plans are executed through interactive principles of the game of
baseball either as: (1) an after school program delivered by volunteers (e.g. coaches,
scientists, engineers) in partnership with teachers and parents, or (2) a supplement to
classroom activities in elementary schools or middle schools.
There are four objectives that drive the scope of the program:
Objective 1: Increase Student Awareness of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
(STEM) Fields as a Future Education and Career Option
Objective 2:Motive Students to Excel Despite Obstacles
Objective 3:Provide a Measurable Opportunity for Individual Transformation
Objective 4:Establish a Framework for Sustainable Change
Math and science topics covered in the curriculum directly support Common Core
Standards by focusing on the National Science Education Standards defined by the
National Academy of Science (NAP 2009).
The curriculum mixes classroom activities (demonstrations, films and clinics), athletic
activities (drills, scrimmages and coaching), and take-home activities, "Baseball to Go", at
the appropriate level for the targeted age groups. The mixed mode of instruction promotes
student engagement and addresses specific learning styles in each cohort (i.e. visual,
auditory, read/write, and kinesthetic).
Curriculum includes:
Lesson 1 - Baseball Positions
Lesson 2 - Scoring
Lesson 3 - Strike Zone
Lesson 4 - Baseball Statistics
Lesson 5 - Baseball Field Geometry
Lesson 6 - Nutrition for Peak Performance
Lesson 7 - Physiology
Lesson 8 - Biomechanics
